Note: Francois Forster: Early nineteenth century engravers excelled in many areas of technical accomplishments, particularly in the skills of rendering fine details, tonal values and the effects of light and shade. In these areas two artists in particular gained the highest honours, Raphael Morghen and Francois Forster.
Born in Switzerland, Francois Forster was instructed in engraving by P. G. Langlois, in Paris. Showing remarkable abilities at an early age, Francois Forster won First Prize in engraving from the French Academy in 1814 and was then sent to Rome for a period of several years to complete his formal studies. After his return Francois Forster gained an international reputation for both his studies after old masters and his portraits of important contemporaries. In the 1830's and 1840's he made a number of fine engravings after the designs of Titian, Veronese, Raphael and Leonardo. Francois Forster was awarded the distinctions of being elected to the Institute of France (1844) as well as the Academies of Berlin and Brussels.
Titian (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1487 – Venice, 1576): The greatest master of the Venetian School, Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) studied and trained under Giovanni Bellini, in Venice. As early as 1507, Titian was receiving government commissions and working alongside such artists as Giorgione. In 1516 he succeeded Bellini as the Official Painter to the Doge of Venice. By 1530 Titian’s clientele included most of the rulers and nobility of all of Catholic Europe. He was particularly patronised by Emperor Charles V and his son, Philip II, during the following years. In the 1540’s Titian assumed the unofficial role of portraitist to the Farnese, the family of Pope Paul the Third. As well such powerful figures as the Dukes of Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino continually vied for his portraits and mythological and religious scenes. As a result Titian became perhaps the most politically powerful artist of the Italian Renaissance. Titian’s influence has proved to be vast. Such masters as Poussin, Velazquez and Rubens have revered his art. This original engraving depicts a portrait of a woman looking at her hair while a man holds the mirror up behind her head. Below the image the artist depicts the coat of arms of the Prince of Wagram. The inscription under the image reads; "La Maitresse du Titien, Dediee et Prensentee A. S. A. S. Le Prince de Wagram et de Neuchatel, vice Connetable,", and "Le Titien Pinxt. Forster del & sc., La Maitresse Du Titien; 'imprimee par Ramboz, 'Ecrit par Piquet Jeune,. A Manheim chez Artaria and Fontaine. Par son Ires humble, ires fidele et tres soumis sujet, Forster." The British museum of art includes an impression of "La Maitresse du Titien" in its permanent collection. Museum number 1875,0710.1394. it is a fine, original example of the engraved art based upon a design created by Titian'.
