Francois Forster - Her Most Gracious Majesty The Queen

Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen

Francois Forster's original engraving Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen is based upon a design created by the British artist, Franz Xaver Winterhalter. It is printed upon fine china paper and pressed onto a larger sheet of sturdy wove paper. This impression was published 1853 by Thomas Boys in London. Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen is a prime example of the portrait art of Francois Forster.

Note: Francois Forster: Early nineteenth century engravers excelled in many areas of technical accomplishments, particularly in the skills of rendering fine details, tonal values and the effects of light and shade. In these areas two artists in particular gained the highest honours, Raphael Morghen and Francois Forster.
Born in Switzerland, Francois Forster was instructed in engraving by P. G. Langlois, in Paris. Showing remarkable abilities at an early age, Forster won First Prize in engraving from the French Academy in 1814 and was then sent to Rome for a period of several years to complete his formal studies. After his return Francois Forster gained an international reputation for both his studies after old masters and his portraits of important contemporaries. In the 1830's and 1840's he made a number of fine engravings after the designs of Titian, Veronese, Raphael and Leonardo. Forster was awarded the distinctions of being elected to the Institute of France (1844) as well as the Academies of Berlin and Brussels.
Edition: Looking at this original impression of Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen, it is little wonder why Francois Forster's art was so highly venerated. In this now famous portrait of the young Queen Victoria, Forster's genius at capturing both tone and texture is seen at it's finest. G. C. Williamson lists Her Most Gracious Majesty, The Queen as one of Forster master works. * This work of engraved art proved to be very popular and the London publisher, Thomas Boys, issued two editions, first in 1847 and then in 1853. This impression originates from the second edition.
