Wenzel Hollar (Wenceslaus Hollar)

Wenzel Hollar Wenceslaus Hollar - The Habit of a Bishop

The Habit of a Bishop

Wenzel Hollar's, original etching, "The Habit of a Bishop", belongs to a set of nine etchings the artist created around 1660. Entitled, "The Habits of the Nobility", the set is also commonly called, 'Hollar's Habits'. Besides the portrayal of a Bishop, Wenceslaus Hollar also etched the robes and habits of the Prince, a Duke, a Marquesse, a Knight of the Garter, a Lord, a Viscount, a Baron and a Judge for the series. Like all of Wenzel Hollar’s great art, "The Habit of a Bishop" combines great detail and clarity with strong artistic effects. This original etching is printed upon 18th century paper as published by Bowles around 1732. "The Habit of a Bishop" represents a charming example of the famous etched art of Wenzel Hollar.

Note: Wenzel Hollar 'Wenceslaus Hollar': One of Europe's greatest original etchers of the seventeenth century, Wenzel Hollar first studied etching techniques under Matthaus Merian in Prague. Shortly after 1636, the touring Earl of Arundel employed Hollar as his topographical engraver, and later invited the artist to return to his English estate with him. With the exception of a one year absence, Wenceslaus Hollar spent the remainder of his life in England, leaving a masterful artistic record of the times and of his talents. Hollar's art covers portrait, illustrative, costume, topographical and architectural subjects. Today he is regarded as a master etcher in all these fields.
The first edition of Wenzel Hollar's "The Habits of the Nobility" was published around the year 1650. In 1732 the London publisher, Bowles, acquired the original plates and printed a second edition. These later impressions are distinguished by the fact that Bowles added a number in the upper right corner to each of the plates. Such is the case with this impression of "The Habit of a Bishop".
