Bertauts, Paris" along the upper and lower margins as commissioned and published in 1851 by L'Artiiste, France's foremost nineteenth century publisher of artistic lithographs since its inception in 1831. Note: Charles Joshua Chaplin 'Charles J. Chaplin': The son of an English father and French mother, Charles Joshua Chaplin chose France as his permanent home, eventually becoming a citizen in 1886. He began his formal art education in Paris in 1840 at both the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and at the studio of Michel Martin Drolling. Charles J. Chaplin first exhibited his art at the Salon de Paris in 1845 and during the following years his art appeared in major annual exhibitions in France, England and the United States.

Nymphe bocagere (Woodland Nymph) dates from Charles Chaplin's early Realist and Romantic period, which took place from approximately 1846 to 1852. His work from this period includes portraits and landscapes, most notably of the countryside of Auvergne. He also created several lithographs based upon the designs of contemporary French artists. Such is the case with this beautiful lithograph.

By 1855 Charles J. Chaplin had turned from Realism and Naturalism to more elegant, almost sumptuous techniques that made many compare his work to the great eighteenth century painter, Francois Boucher. Like Boucher, Chaplin made his fine reputation mostly on his ability to depict feminine grace and beauty.
Two of the greatest admirers of Chaplin's art were Napoleon III and his wife, Empress Eugenie. As such he was employed in 1860 to decorate the rooms of the Tuileries, and afterwards, the rooms of the Empress in the Elysee and the Hotel Musard.
Charles Joshua Chaplin served as a Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and also conducted art classes for women in his studio. In the latter regard his students included Mary Cassatt and Louise Abbema.
Charles Chaplin was appointed Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur in 1879. Today his fine paintings and prints are included in public collections in Paris, Rouen, Bordeaux, Reims and Bayonne, and internationally in such museums as the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Philippe Auguste Jeanron: A French painter, printmaker, journalist, critic and director, Philippe Auguste Jeanron came to Paris in 1828 and studied art under both Sigalon and Souchon. Shortly thereafter he began to exhibit his art at the annual shows at the Paris Salon and won his first medal there in 1833. A friend of both Charles Jacques and Jean-Francois Millet, the landscape art of Philippe Jeanron also figured prominently in exhibitions of the Barbizon School.

From 1848 to 1850 Philippe Auguste Jeanron served as the Director of the National Museums, including the Louvre. Later he served as Director of the Academy at Marseilles. The paintings of Philippe Auguste Jeanron are today housed in public collections in Caen, Marseilles, Paris, Lille, Boulogne, Chartres, Aix and elsewhere.
Nymphe bocagere (Woodland Nymph): Charles Joshua Chaplin's original lithograph, Nymphe bocagere (Woodland Nymph) is based upon a painting by Philippe Auguste Jeanron. The British Museum in London includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection. Its impression, however, bears the title, Nymphe Couchee (Nymph Lying Down), along the lower margin, also, the museum has dated that impression, 1852. As well, the name of the publisher has changed to "Marchant, Edit. Alliance des Arts, rue de Rivoli, 140." This original lithograph is an earlier impression published in 1851 by L’Artiste, perhaps the most prominent publisher of original lithographs during this period. The British Museum impression may be viewed on their site under the Museum Number, 1889,0608.589.
An original lithograph, Nymphe bocagere (Woodland Nymph), bears the publisher's name, "L'Artiste" along the upper margin, and the title, “Nymphe bocagere”, the artists' names, "Chaplin d'apres Jeanron", & the printer's details, "Imp. Bertauts, Paris" along the lower margin as commissioned and published in 1851 by L'Artiiste, France's foremost nineteenth century publisher of artistic lithographs, etchings, & engravings since its inception in 1831. See: L’Artiste, Revue de Paris, V Serie, Tome V, Paris Aux Bureaux de L'Artiste, Quai Voltaire, 5 M DCCCLI (1851). Nymphe bocagere is listed under the table Des Matieres, Juin, Juillet, Aout, Septembre, Octobre, Novembre, December 1851, pg. 2, Gravures, Septieme Livraison' as Nymphe Bocagere, lithographie. de M. Ch. Chaplin, d'apres M. Jeanron. For Nymphe bocagere, on page 112 of this issue, the editor writes; "Nymphe bocagere vue de face. Celle-la aussi serait digne du marbre. Si Clesinger passait par la, il ne la manquerait pas. Jeanron et Chaplin ont rendu, avec beaucoup de charme et de grace, la chastete ondoyante du contour. * Le Directeur: Ferdinand Chretien". A loose translation of the text reads, (Woodland Nymphe front view. It is also worthy of marble. If Clesinger (the sculptor, Auguste Clesinger), went by, he would not fail to stop. Jeanron and Chaplin created it with lots of charm and grace, the chastity, the undulating contour. *Director: Ferdinand Chretien). The Gallica, Biblioteca Nationale de France includes an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection. It may be viewed on their site under the Museum Number, 1851 (SER5, T5).
L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Nymphe bocagere" by Charles J. Chaplin is a striking example of the lithographic art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1851. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
Bertauts, Publishing & Printing Firm (c. 1830's - c. 1970's): The renowned French lithographic publisher and printer, Bertauts was considered one of the finest printers in Europe during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the Beaus-Arts – de la Lithographie et des Imprimeurs, Bertauts began printing lithographs after 1826 and established his lithographic firm in 1836. During the 1830's and into the 1870's, original lithographs printed by Bertauts appeared in such publications as, "L'Artiste, Paris" (1831-1904), "Album du Salon" (1839-1844), "Les Beaux-Arts" (1843-1844), "Les Artistes Contemporains", (1845 - 1853), "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes, Paris" (1850 - 1862), "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" (1858), the "Gazette des beaux arts" (1859-1939), "Souvenirs d' Artistes" (1860-1876), and other major 19th century art journals of the time. Nymphe bocagere (Woodland Nymph) was printed by Bertauts in Paris for L'Artiste in 1851.
