| Note: | Louis Boulanger "Louis Candide Boulanger': An early French nineteenth century painter and lithographer, Louis Boulanger entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1821. After concluding his studies under Lethiere and Deveria, he quickly established his reputation by being awarded a second class medal from the Academy in 1927 and a first class Medal in 1836. He began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1831 and was a frequent exhibitor there for the following thirty-five years. Boulanger also painted murals for several churches in Paris. The artist may be found listed under Louis Candide Boulanger. |
| Louis Boulanger was a close friend of the novelist, Victor Hugo. He was also a leading participant in the early years of French Romanticism. Like other great Romantic artists of the day, such as Delacroix, Louis Boulanger was drawn to scenes of passion and sometimes violence. Other dramatic and exotic lithographs of a similar nature created in the 1830's by Boulanger include, "le Lion et le Tigre", "Le Sommeil du Lion", "L'Attaque du Tigre" and this original lithograph entitled, Attaque du Lion. Louis Boulanger's original lithographs appeared in various 19th century French art journals such as, L'Artiste, La Ruche, Souvenirs d' Artistes and other journals of the period. This original lithograph bears the heading "Souvenirs d'Artistes", and the number "405" in the upper margin, as well as the artist's name "L. Boulanger", the title "Attaque du Lion" & the printers details, "Imp. Bertauts, r. Cadet, Paris" in the lower margin as published for the Souvenirs d'Artistes. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, includes an impression of "Attaque du Lion" in its permanent collection, reference # 1999.111.4. | |
| "Souvenirs d' Artistes" was a 19th century French publication (1860-1876), reviving earlier masters which included reproductive and most importantly original prints by French artists, such as Honore Daumier, Paul Gavarni, Adolphe Mouilleron, Antoine Louis Barye, Joseph Felon, Gustave Dore, Charles Jacque, Theodore Chasseriau, Louis Boulanger and others. Attaque du Lion is a striking example of both Louis Candide Boulanger's lithographic art and of French Romantic imagery. The British Museum, London includes a collection of works published for Souvenirs d'Artists. | |
