Vanity Fair - The Lord Chief Justice of England Lord Alverstone

The Lord Chief Justice of England (Lord Alverstone)

Vanity Fair's original lithograph, "The Lord Chief Justice of England" (Lord Alverstone) hails from the former collection of the "Vanity Fair" Ltd., of Cincinnati, Ohio. The set known as the 'Red Robed Judges'. This original lithograph is printed on thick wove paper and its full margins as published by "Vanity Fair" and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Lith. in 1913. It depicts a ortrait of "The Lord Chief Justice of England".

Title: The Lord Chief Justice of England (Lord Alverstone)
Designer: Monogram: W. H.
Date: 1913
Medium: Original Lithograph Printed in Colour
Printer: Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Lith.
Note: Vanity Fair: The historic first issue of Vanity Fair was published in London on November 7, 1868. Founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, the purpose of this ambitious weekly publication was to expose contemporary vanities and those responsible for them. Each issue contained a full page, original colour lithographic portrayal of a popular sovereign, statesmen or man of the day, caricatured in the smooth and good-natured manner which became renowned as the 'Vanity Fair Style'. Working under the pseudonyms of 'Spy' and 'Ape', two artists in particular became notorious for their portrayals, although many other important artists, including Max Beerbohm, Tissot, 'Quiz', 'WH', and Sickert worked for the publication on a regular basis and contributed some of its greatest art.
The last issue of Vanity Fair was published in 1914. Through its forty-five year history, it produced the definitive caricatures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. collectors of these fine, original prints have always been numerous. In recent years, prices for these fascinating caricatures have dramatically increased, particularly for the more desirable examples.
The Red Robes: During the history of Vanity Fair, a large grouping of members of the Bench and Bar were portrayed. Of that exclusive set known as the 'Red Robed Judges', however, only ten were ever made. Because of their desirability and scarcity these ten prints represent the 'creme de la creme' of the entire Vanity Fair collection. Red Robed Judges in excellent condition, such as this original example entitled, "The Lord Chief Justice of England" are simply becoming difficult to find at any price.
Provenance: This original lithograph entitled, "The Lord Chief Justice of England" (Lord Alverstone) hails from the former collection of the Vanity Fair Ltd., of Cincinnati, Ohio. These prints originally appeared with a textual biography. A copy of this biography is enclosed. Also included is the Certificate of Authenticity from the former collection of the Vanity Fair Ltd., of Cincinnati, Ohio.
