Matthew James Lawless - Sisters of Mercy

Sisters of Mercy

An original etching by Matthew James Lawless, Sisters of Mercy is one of the finest etchings published by the Junior Etching Club. This warm, domestic scene depicts two nuns and a young girl preparing a meal within a rustic kitchen. One of the sisters peels a carrot while the other is gathering more vegetables from the child's apron. What makes Lawless's composition most remarkable, however, is its point of view, as it is depicted from the actual eye level of the infant. This original etching served as an illustration for Gerald Griffin's (1803-1840) poem, The Sister of Mercy. Several lines from the poem are quoted below;

"She put from her person the trappings of pride,
And passed from her home with the joy of a bride;
Forgot are the claims of her riches and birth,
For she barters for Heaven the glory of Earth!" * Gerald Griffin

Sisters of Mercy, is one of four of his works of art that was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club for the 1862 portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets. The artist's other etched contributions are The Little Shipwright, The Drummer and The Bivouac.is signed and dated "M. J. Lawless 1859" by Matthew James Lawless within the etching and bearing the artist's name "M. J. Lawless" and the publisher's name and date, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. This is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the British artist, Matthew James Lawless.

Title: Sisters of Mercy
Artist: Lawless, Matthew James (Dublin, 1837 - Bayswater, 1864)
Date: 1859
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Day & Son in London
Edition: Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club, 1862.
Note: Matthew James Lawless: Despite a tragically short life (he died of consumption at the age of twenty-seven), Matthew James Lawless is rightly considered a high ranking, Pre-Raphaelite illustrator, etcher and painter. Of Irish birth, M. J. Lawless was educated at the Prior Park School, Bath, and at Langham, Cary's and Leigh's Art School in London. In London he was also a student of Henry O'Neill, RA.
  In his brief career Lawless was best known for his illustrations to such 1860's journals as Good Words, Once a Week, Churchman's Family Magazine, and London Society. He also contributed drawings to such illustrated books as Lyra Germanica, Pictures of Society, Touches of Nature and Thornbury's Legendary Ballads. It was in his illustrative work that M. J. Lawless was often compared to another great Pre-Raphaelite artist, Sir John Everett Millais. Matthew James Lawless also exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy, from 1859 until the year of his death.
  Matthew James Lawless was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862.
  Other impressions of Sisters of Mercy will be found in the collections of the British Museum (Registration #1949,0503.12) and at the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow Catalogue number: 50105.

As earlier noted, Sisters of Mercy, is one of four of his works of art that was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club for the 1862 portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets. The artist's other etched contributions are The Little Shipwright, The Drummer and The Bivouac. This original Matthew James Lawless etching served as an illustration for Gerald Griffin's (1803-1840) poem, The Sister of Mercy. Several lines from the poem are quoted below;

"She felt in her spirit the summons of grace,
That called her to live for a suffering race;
And heedless of pleasure, of comfort, of home,
Rose quickly, like Mary, and answered, "I come!"
She put from her person the trappings of pride,
And passed from her home with the joy of a bride;
Forgot are the claims of her riches and birth,
For she barters for Heaven the glory of Earth!" *Gerald Griffin

  Gerald Griffin's (Limerick, Republic of Ireland, 1803 - Cork, Republic of Ireland, 1840) : Gerald Griffin was an Irish novelist, dramatist, and poet. Throughout his literary career, Griffin had many works published in book form, and made many contributions to journals, and periodicals, both in Limerick and London. Griffin's early attempts at a literary career in London were difficult, but his situation improved after he decided to write (under a variety of pseudonyms) for the London journals, the Literary Gazette, and the News of Literature and Fashion. In 1827, Gerald Griffin returned to Ireland for a short visit, but returned to London to make arrangements for his next publication. His oeuvre was diverse; it included, poetry, novels, comic verse, reviews of books and plays, articles on opera, satire, and various other forms of literature. His published compositions included, Holland-Tide (1826), Tales of the Munster Festivals (1827),The Collegians (1829), The Rivals and Tracy's Ambition (1829), The Invasion (1832), Tales of My Neighbourhood (1835), and other works. In 1838 two years before his death, Griffin decided to embrace the monastic life of the Christian Brothers' Teaching Order and was admitted to the religious habit that same year.
  John Power, the author of the 1881 volume entitled, "Gerald Griffin: His Life and Poems" notes on pages 46-47 that Gerald Griffin's interest in the community of the good Sisters was fervent as his sister had embraced that order. Power includes Griffin's complete poem under the title of, The Sister of Charity on page 47 & 48. Interestingly enough, It is the same poem (word for word) that is listed in the table of contents under the title of, Sisters of Mercy in the 1862 portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, and placed within the text to accompany the original etching entitled, "The Sister of Mercy" by James Lawless. To make it even more confusing, the 1862 portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, includes a second poem (different poem) entitled, The Sister of Charity by Alaric A. Watts to accompany this James Lawless etching. Note: The volume entitled, The Literary Souvenir edited by Alaric Alexander Watts also contains a poem entitled, "The Sister of Charity, by Aleric A. Watts, written after meeting a Sister of Charity in the hotel Dieu. From Lyrics of the Heart, and other Poems" printed on pages 63 to 67. It however is the complete version, and although the the one placed within the pages of Passages from Modern English Poets is lovely, it is a shorter version of the original. For the Gerald Griffin poem, please see: "Gerald Griffin: His Life and Poems. A Biographical and Critical Essay, on the Life and Poems of Gerald Griffin." by John Power, Teacher of the Templeorum National School, Piltown, Co. Kilkenn., published in Dublin, by James Duffy & Sons, 15 Wellington Quay, And La Paternoster Row, London, 1881, pp. 46, 47, 48. * For the Alaric A. Watts poem, please see: The Literary Souvenir edited by Alaric Alexander Watts, London Longman, Rees Orme, Brown, Green, & Longman, 1834, pp. 63 - 67.
  Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. Matthew James Lawless's original etching, Sisters of Mercy was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62.
