Note: Maxime Lalanne: A leading French etcher and painter of landscapes and urban views, Maxime Lalanne studied under Gigoux. His art was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1852 and he continued to regularly show both etchings and paintings there until the mid 1880's. He was also the author of several important books on the subjects of etching and other graphic arts.
Maxime Lalanne was at the forefront of the French revival of etching during the 1860's decade. He was a founding member of the Societe des Aquafortistes, along with Auguste Delatre, Cadart, Ribot and Bracquemond. In total Lalanne created over one hundred and fifty fine etchings.
Lalanne's art continued to be influential in the early twentieth century when a major retrospective exhibition was held in London in 1905. His entire oeuvre of etchings was exhibited there and many contemporary British and French etchers closely studied his unique style.
Cusset, Excursion de Vichy is one of Lalanne's early great works of etched art. His ability to render almost Impressionistic effects of light and shade, construct strong details and forms and, perhaps most importantly, create movement and life, is without equal in the medium of etching.
Hamerton's, Etching and Etchers: The writings of Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) did more to restore the art of etching as an original and major art medium than any other nineteenth century author. His first book, The Painter's Camp, was published in 1862. He also served as the editor of The Portfolio (1870-1893), a major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching. Of his many books the most influential was Etching and Etchers which introduced both artists and collectors to the many creative and technical aspects of the medium. The first edition was published in 1868 and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer as well as late printings of seventeenth century Dutch masters. A second edition followed in 1876, but without any original etchings. The third edition (from which this original etching entitled, Cusset, Excursion de Vichy hails) was published in a large paper edition limited to one thousand copies. For this most valuable publication Hamerton secured etchings from such contemporary artists as Whistler, Haden, Palmer, Israels, Jacque, Jacquemart, Lalanne, Appian, Legros, Herkomer and others. In total over twenty original etchings were printed for this important 1880 portfolio. It should finally be noted that Hamerton was meticulous in his inclusion of plates for this edition. Each of the etchings selected were in pristine condition, showing no sign of wear or deterioration of any kind. An original etching by Maxime Lalanne, Cusset, Excursion de Vichy hails from Philip Gilbert Hamerton's 1880 portfolio entitled Etching and Etchers published by Macmillan and Co., London.
For this 1880 edition P. G. Hamerton secured two original etchings from Maxime Lalanne. They are Cusset, Excursion de Vichy (1864) and Rade de Bordeaux (1868). Cusset, Excursion de Vichy was published for Alfred Cadart's Paris art journal of original etchings, "Societe des Aqua-Fortistes - Eaux-Fortes Modernes" (Society of Etchers - Modern Etchings), by A. Cadart & Luquet in 1864. The 1864 edition is listed in Maxime Lalanne, Traite de La Gravure - A L'Eau-Forte, - Texte et Planches Par Maxime Lalanne, Paris, Cadart et Luquet, Editeurs, Gerants de la Societe des Aqua-Fortistes, 79, Rue Richelieu,79, MDCCC LXVI (1866), Catalogue des Lithographies - Gravures - Eaux-Fortes Publiees par la Maison Cadart & Luquet, "Eaux-Fortes Modernes" Publication Artistique d'Oeuvres Originales par La Societe Des Aqua-Fortistes, 3me Annee, (1864-1965), Frontispice et Introduction, pg. 15, #123, Maxime Lalanne - "Cusset (Pres de Vichy)". As stated earlier, this impression hails from the Philip Gilbert Hamerton 1880 edition. The National Gallery of Canada (Musee des Beaux-Arts du Canada) includes a Cadart impression of Cusset, Excursion de Vichy in its permanent collection, Inventory No 23702.123.
