Samuel Palmer - The Herdsman's Cottage

The Herdsman's Cottage ('Sunset')

Samuel Palmer's original etching, "The Herdsman's Cottage ('Sunset')" is printed upon hand made, laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published by Macmillan and Co., London for Philip Gilbert Hamerton's Etching and Etchers in 1880. It is signed with the artist's 'S. P.' monogramme in the plate along the lower left margin. "The Herdsman's Cottage ('Sunset')" is a fine, original example of the famous landscape art created by the British artist, Samuel Palmer.

Title: The Herdsman's Cottage ('Sunset')
Artist: Palmer, Samuel (Newington, 1805 - Redhill, 1881)
Date: 1850 (P. G. Hamerton's, Etching and Etchers, 1880)
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Macmillan and Co., London
Source: Etching and Etchers by Philip Gilbert Hamerton
Note:
"It is impossible to understand Samuel Palmer without realizing the influence of Blake upon his work and upon his life. Fortunately Palmer was too true a disciple to flatter Blake by mere imitation. ... What he did derive from his discipleship of Blake was an intense consciousness of the reality behind appearances, that sense of the oneness of a visible scene which is sometimes more potent for the production of unity in a work of art than any mere external 'sense of design', or theory of formal relationships. ... He preserved, until the very last of his works, a curious intensity in his vision of landscape, and a capacity for infusing a scene with emotion, which it is as difficult to explain as to deny." *

"Samuel Palmer sought to describe the land, its inhabitants and nature not just as physical reality but by conveying its essence and the feelings that memory and a sense of the distant past which landscape holds."**

The son of a bookseller, Samuel Palmer began painting at the age of thirteen. One year later he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1826 he moved to the remote village of Shoreham in Kent where he and such fellow artists as George Richmond and Edward Calvert formed the group now known as 'The Ancients'. Inspired by the poetry of Virgil and Milton and, most particularly by the writings and art of William Blake (whom Samuel Palmer first met in 1824), these artists produced some of the greatest pastoral imagery in the history of British art.
Partly because he lived in somewhat isolated conditions and partly because his work was anything but 'Victorian' in both style and temperament, the art of Samuel Palmer was not fully appreciated during his life. In the early twentieth century, however, Samuel Palmer's watercolours and most specifically his etchings came to the forefront. Championed by such scholars and artists as Martin Hardie, Lawrence Binyon, Sir Frank Short, F. L. Griggs, William Larkins, Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland, Palmer has now taken his place as a most important figure in English nineteenth century art.
Samuel Palmer began his first etching in 1850. The same year he was elected to the Etching Club. Amazingly he completed only seventeen works of art in this medium for which now he is most famous. Of etching Palmer wrote, "It is my misfortune to work slowly, not from any wish to niggle, but because I cannot otherwise get certain shimmerings of light, and mysteries of shadow; so that only a pretty good price would yield a journeyman's wages." * Thus financial necessity drove Samuel Palmer to dedicate more time to watercolours than to etching.

The Herdsman's Cottage dates from 1850 and was Samuel Palmer's third etching. Only a handful of proof impressions were struck at this time. A meticulous craftsman, Palmer reworked the plate about twenty years later, creating additional, darkened lines in the sky and reducing the plate slightly on a side margin. The plate was then acquired by P. G. Hamerton who published editions in The Portfolio (1872), Examples of Modern Etching (1875) and Etching and Etchers (1880). This original impression hails from Hamerton's 1880 edition. Of The Herdsman's Cottage, Hamerton wrote,

"In its own way, it is like some pearl or diamond without a flaw, but pearls or diamonds are very common things upon the earth in comparison with etchings of this quality. "***

Hamerton's, Etching and Etchers: The writings of Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) did more to restore the art of etching as an original and major art medium than any other nineteenth century author. His first book, The Painter's Camp, was published in 1862. He also served as the editor of The Portfolio (1870-1893), a major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching. Of his many books the most influential was Etching and Etchers which introduced both artists and collectors to the many creative and technical aspects of the medium. The first edition was published in 1868 and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer as well as late printings of seventeenth century Dutch masters. A second edition followed in 1876, but without any original etchings. The third edition (from which this original etching hails) was published in a large paper edition limited to one thousand copies. For this most valuable publication Hamerton secured etchings from such contemporary artists as Whistler, Haden,Israels, Jacque, Jacquemart, Billet, Soumy, Appian, Legros, Unger, Herkomer, Samuel Palmer and others. In total over twenty original etchings were printed for this important 1880 portfolio. It should finally be noted that Hamerton was meticulous in his inclusion of plates for this edition. Each of the etchings selected were in pristine condition, showing no sign of wear or deterioration of any kind. An original etching by Samuel Palmer, The Herdsman's Cottage ('Sunset') hails from Philip Gilbert Hamerton's 1880 portfolio entitled Etching and Etchers published by Macmillan and Co., London.
