Jules Jacques Veyrassat - Drinking Horses from Philip Gilbert Hamerton's Chapters on Animals

Drinking Horses

Jules Jacques Veyrassat's original etching, Drinking Horses was published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, London for Philip Gilbert Hamerton's, Chapters on Animals, in 1874. In Etching and Etchers, Hamerton wrote at length upon the horse etchings of Jules Veyrassat and compared the methods of this etcher to that of a composer of music. He wrote, "A great secret of success in etching is to keep the arrangements for chiaroscuro simple, and to have a few kinds of texture as different as possible from each other, in order to obtain striking contrasts. Veyrassat's scale, in his small etchings, consists mainly of four notes, an intense black, for which a black animal is introduced as a pretext, two middle tints for earth, hay-stacks, loaded carts, and part of the sky, and lastly a very pale tint for the sky alone. … Now the reason why these etchings are so charming as technical music is because the artist has thoroughly mastered these few elements of effect, so as to use them in all their strength of contrast, and yet at the same time in perfect harmony, and as he works with few and widely-separated means of expression, they do not get confounded together by miscalculations in the biting." -- P. G Hamerton, Etching and Etchers, Boston, Roberts Brothers, 1878, pp. 213 & 214.

This original etching is printed upon fine, hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published by Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 54, Fleet Street, London for P. G. Hamerton's, Chapters on Animals in 1874. It is signed in the plate by Jules Veyrassat, 'J. Veyrassat' to the lower right. It is a fine, original example of the 19th century animal and landscape art created by the French artist, Jules Jacques Veyrassat, one of France’s greatest artists of the horse.

Note: Jules Jacques Veyrassat 'Jules Veyrassat': One of France’s most decorated painters and etchers of animal studies, nature and landscape, Jules Jacques Veyrassat studied art in his native Paris under Lehman. He exhibited his first paintings there at the Paris Salon in 1848. Veyrassat’s career as an original etcher began in the early 1860’s and these works of art quickly gained for him an international reputation as he received medals for his etchings in both 1866 and 1869. As well, the French government awarded him the prestigious Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur in 1878.
As both an etcher and a painter, Jules Veyrassat has most often been associated with the famous French Barbizon school, most particularly with the rural art of Charles Jacque and J. F. Millet. But it was not the forest around Barbizon that drew Veyrassat’s attention; rather most of his art depicts the farming plains of central France. And it was in this sphere that Veyrassat’s true genius developed, particularly in his brilliant depictions of the horse.
Although he never traveled abroad, Jules Jacques Veyrassat’s fame was probably even greater in Britain than in France. The great English writer upon the art of etching, P. G. Hamerton, commissioned Veyrassat to create etchings for a number of his works, including, Chapters on Animals (1874) and Etching and Etchers (1880). Also, the English writer, Frederick Wedmore, championed Veyrassat’s delicate miniature art. He wrote, “His etchings when they are delightful, are invariably small. Perfect unity belonged to each piece: each piece was lyric of the country -- a record beautiful and real. They comprise some of the most distinguished studies wrought in all the years since men have etched.” *
In 1874 Philip Gilbert Hamerton, the influential author of Etching and Etchers and the editor of The Portfolio, commissioned Jules Veyrassat for eight original etchings to be included in his publication, Chapters on Animals. This impression of Drinking Horses hails from this publication. The Swiss/French etcher, Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), also contributed a number of etchings to this publication.
Drinking Horses depicts a three horses, two black and one white in the center drinking water by the doorway of a white limestone & stucco farm house. In Etching and Etchers, P. G. Hamerton wrote at length upon the horse etchings of Jules Jacques Veyrassat and compared the methods of this etcher to that of a composer of music. 213 & 214..
