Stephen James Ferris & Gilbert Stuart

Stephen James Ferris - Gilbert Stuart - Mrs. Philip Nicklin

Mrs. Philip Nicklin

Stephen James Ferris' original etching, entitled, "Mrs. Philip Nicklin" is based upon the painting by Gilbert Stuart. It is printed on 19th century wove paper as published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston for "The American Art Review". Ferris' etching was featured in Koehler's "The American Art Review" and in the Boston exhibition of 1881 was James Ferris's portrait of Mrs. Philip Nicklin (nee Julianna Chew). She was the daughter of Chief Justice Benjamin Chew), dated 1879, after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. It illustrated an article on historical portraiture by Charles Henry Hart, who commented that the etching was a 'beautiful portrait ... etched from the original, with much nicety and feeling. "Mrs. Philip Nicklin" is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the American artists, Stephen Ferris and Gilbert Stuart.

Note: Stephen James Ferris 'Stephen Ferris': An influential Philadelphia painter and etcher of portraits and figure studies, Stephen James Ferris studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris, under Jean Leon Gerome. He achieved a considerable reputation for his art in both America and Europe and received the prestigious Fortuny Prize for the best portrait, Rome, 1876. Ferris also served for twenty six years as the Instructor of Art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women.
Stephen Ferris's association with American art and artists is also important. His wife, Elizabeth Moran Ferris, was the sister of the artists, Thomas and Peter Moran. His son, Jean Leon Gerome Moran, became a much admired painter in the late nineteenth century. Stephen Ferris was also a major connoisseur of fine prints, particularly etchings. Over two thousand of his collected prints are now housed at the Smithsonian Institution under the title of 'The Ferris Collection'.
Stephen James Ferris 'Stephen Ferris', along with his brother-in-law, Thomas Moran, first studied the process of etching in 1860 from the engraver and publisher, John Sartain. Stephen Ferris's first published etching was created in 1875. During the following years he created many fine portraits and figure studies in this medium. Many were based upon the designs of the artists he admired most, such as, Gerome (his former teacher), Fortuny and Mouilleron. Along with Anna Lea Merritt and Stephen Schoff, Ferris is considered to be among the first rank of early American portrait etchers.
Gilbert Stuart (North Kingston, Rhode Island, 1755 - Boston, 1828): Gilbert Stuart was a prominent early American portrait painter. He studied art under the American neo-classicist painter, Benjamin West (1738 - 1820) and the Scottish painter and engraver, Cosmo Alexander (1724-1772). Stuart was declared the "Father of American Portraiture " by his contemporaries because he portrayed many of the notable men and women of the Federal period in the United States. Today his art is included in the permanent collections the Metropolitan Museum of art, the Frick Collection in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the National Portrait Gallery in London and others. His best known work, the famous unfinished portrait of George Washington, referred to as the Athenaeum appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for a century and various 19th and early 20 century U.S. Postage stamps. A few of Gilbert Stuart's numerous paintings include the portraits of Martha Washington, Abigail Smith Adams, John Adams, Edward Addison, Mrs. George Hamilton, William Cooper, Benjamin West, Mrs. Philip Nicklin and many other historical and important portraits.
Mrs. Philip Nicklin: Nee Julianna Chew, Mrs. Philip Nicklin was the daughter of Chief Justice Benjamin Chew and Elizabeth Oswald Chew. Julianna Chew was baptized on the 20th of June 1765. Julianna Married Philip NIcklin on April 1793. "Featured in Koehler's "The American Art Review" and in the Boston exhibition of 1881 was the portrait of Mrs. Philip Nicklin dated 1879, after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. It illustrated an article on historical portraiture by Charles Henry Hart, who commented that the etching was a 'beautiful portrait ... etched from the original. The lady represented was one of Philadelphia's beauties, Mrs. Philip Nicklin. Julianna died on the eleventh of August 1845.
The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, "The American Art Review" (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, F. S. Church, Anna Lea Merritt, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Coleman, Alfred Brennan and S. J. Ferris.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century.
