Note:	John Henry Hill 'J. H. Hill': A nineteenth century landscape painter and etcher, J. H. Hill studied aquatint and etching techniques under his father, John William Hill (1812-1879). Hill's first etchings date from 1857 and during the following years he produced both individual plates and sets of etchings such as Sketches from Nature (1866). John Henry Hill was a full member of the New York Etching Club.
	John Henry Hill was an ardent admirer of both the art of J. M. W. Turner and of the English Pre-Raphaelite movement. He visited London in 1864 and 1865 to study these masters. He was also a founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art (1863).
	John Henry Hill dedicated his art to his reverence for nature. Brilliantly using the tonal affects of aquatint he captured the warmth and intimacy of his landscapes. Moonlight on the Androscoggin is a fine example of his art.
	The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, F. S. Church, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Coleman, Alfred Brennan and S. J. Ferris.
	Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century. Moonlight on the Androscoggin was published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston for The American Art Review in 1880.
