J. Watts, Mills & Benjamin Maud

J. Watts Mills and Benjamin Maud - Lobelia Cavanillesii Mexican cardinal flower the Sierra Madre lobelia Lobelia Laxiflora published for The Botanist

Lobelia Cavanillesii (Mexican cardinalflower, Sierra Madre lobelia, & Lobelia Laxiflora published for 'The Botanist')

J. Watts's original hand-coloured etching, "Lobelia Cavanillesii (Lobelia Laxiflora)" belongs to one of the most beautiful botanical publications of the early nineteenth century, Benjamin Maund’s, "The Botanist". This particular plate depicts the Lobelia laxiflora, which is also known as the Mexican cardinalflower or the Sierra Madre lobelia. A native plant of South, Central and Southern North America the lobelia generally grows to one and a half meters in height. The flowers, usually red, bloom for a period of about one week. Alkaloids are extracted from this plant. This impression is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published between 1836 and 1842. "Lobelia Cavanillesii" is a fine, original example of the botanical art published by Benjamin Maund and the art by the British artists, J. Watts and Mills..

Benjamin Maund: A pharmacist, botanist, printer and publisher, Benjamin Maund (Bromsgrove, Worcester, 1790 – 1863), was a member of the committee of the Worcestershire Natural History Society. In 1825 he produced his first publication, The Botanic Garden, which continued until 1842. Dedicated to the young Queen Victoria, most of the plates were designed by such artists as Augusta Innes Withers, Mrs. Edward Bury and Edwin D. Smith.

Benjamin Maund’s second great publication was "The Botanist" which existed from 1836 to 1842. During this six year span two hundred and fifty striking plates were etched and colored, many of which were designed by either Augusta Withers or by Maund’s daughter. "Lobelia Cavanillesii (Lobelia Laxiflora)" was designed by Mills and etched by S. Watts. Benjamin Maund provided detailed descriptions for each plate and supervised the printing of each work of botanical art.
The 19th Century Botanical Engravers: J. Watts was one of the principal British etchers who produced original etchings and engravings after the designs of M. Hart's for The Botanical Register and Edwards's Botanical Registe and Mills for The Botonist. Unfortunately, not much information is available on many of the 19th century botanical artists because their works were primarily created for scientific and educational purposes. Nevertheless, these etchings were so specialized and meticulous that they have left behind some of the finest records and portrayals of the 19th century floral world. We have now come to regard these engravings such as this original hand-colored etching entitled, Lobelia Cavanillesii, Mexican cardinalflower or the Sierra Madre lobelia (Lobelia Laxiflora) as wonderful works of early botanical art.
