J. Watts & M. Hart

J. Watts and M. Hart - Renanthera Coccinea Scarlet Air Plant Orchid Floral Study for The Botanical Register

Renanthera Coccinea, Scarlet Air Plant, Orchid (Floral Study, Sydenham Edwards, The Botanical Register)

The Renanthera Coccinea Lour, Scarlet Air Plant, Orchid commonly known as 'The Scarlet Renanthera' belongs to the Orchid family and the subfamily of the Epidendroideae. This beautiful flower grows in humid tropical and subtropical climates on rocky slopes and in primary forests at elevations of 550 to 1200 meters and can be found from Hainan to Indochina. John Lindley, the English botanist describes this flower in The Botanical Register in the 1828 issue, it reads; "The species in the genus produces numerous flowers and the color of this orchid is a crimson, sometimes obscurely and transversely banded with paler lines; beneath uniformly orange in the center and redder at the margin".

This floral study entitled, "Renanthera Coccinea Lour, Orchid, or, 'The Scarlet Renanthera' " was etched by J. Watts based upon a design created by the British artist, M. Hart. Dated 1828, this original hand-coloured etching was published by James Ridgway for Sydenham Teak Edwards's botanical magazine entitled, "The Botanical Register, or, Ornamental flower-garden and shrubbery", vol, 15, pl. 1131.

Title: Renanthera Coccinea Lour, Orchid, Scarlet Air Plant, or, The Scarlet Renanthera (Floral Study, Sydenham Edwards, The Botanical Register)
Engraver: Watts, J. (British, 19th c.)
Designer: Hart, M. (British, 19th c.)
Date: 1828
Medium: Original Hand - Coloured Etching
Publisher: James Ridgway, 169, Piccadilly, London
Editor: Sydenham Edwards, London
Note: The 19th Century Botanical Engravers: J. Watts was one of the principal British etchers who produced original etchings and engravings after M. Hart's designs for The Botanical Register and Edward's Botanical Register. Unfortunately, not much information is available on many of the 19th century botanical artists because their works were primarily created for scientific and educational purposes. Nevertheless, these etchings were so specialized and meticulous that they have left behind some of the finest records and portrayals of the 19th century floral world. We have now come to regard these engravings as wonderful works of early botanical art. An article by (J.L.), John Lindley, the English botanist in the 1828 The Botanical Register describes the beauty of the orchid depicted in this original hand-colored etching, it reads; "The work of missionary Loureiro, published in 1790, a drawing in the possession of the Horticultural Society of London, and the reports of some travelers who have visited China, have been, up to present time, the only evidence to Europeans of the existence of this truly magnificent plant, the beauty of whose blossoms surpasses every thing known in the vegetable world." * James Ridgway, London, Sydenham Edwards "The Botanical Register, or, Ornamental Flower-Garden and Shrubbery", 1828, Vol. 14, pg., 521.
Note: The Botanical Magazine or Flower Garden Displayed was founded by William Curtis (1746-99) and in 1787 was published semi-annually in London. It was the first periodical to provide gardeners with important horticultural information and its quick acceptance by the public inspired half a dozen other magazines by the beginning of the nineteenth century. Along with William Kilburn, James Sowerby and Walter Fitch, Sydenham Edwards was one of the principal artists.
Some of the greatest botanical engravings of the early nineteenth century were commissioned for a periodical entitled The Botanical Register. It was published in London by James Ridgeway and edited by the famous botanist, Sydenham Teak Edwards (1769 - 1819) who produced many of the engravings and drawings for Curtis' Botanical Magazine until 1815 when Edwards decided to publish his own monthly magazine.
From its inception in 1815 to the year 1828 The Botanical Register published superb botanical engravings for each issue. All were delicately coloured by hired artists and the larger plates (such as this original example of the orchid, Renanthera Coccinea, Scarlet Air Plant) were folded into the text. The magazine was continued as Edwards's Botanical Register from 1828 to 1847. After 1847 the engravings became too expensive to produce and were replaced with lithographs.
What makes these early and original works of floral art from The Botanical Register so desirable should be obvious at first glance. The engraving is both artistic and accurate and the hand-colouring that was so long ago applied is unparalleled in its subtle ranges of hues and tones. An original engraving such as this example of the Renanthera Coccinea Lour, Orchid, or, 'The Scarlet Renanthera' simply ranks among the finest botanical art one may acquire.
Renanthera Coccinea Lour: The Renanthera Coccinea Lour, commonly known as 'The Scarlet Renanthera' belongs to the Orchid family and the subfamily of the Epidendroideae. This beautiful flower is found in Myanamar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Hong Kong Guaangxi, Hainan and Yunnan China. It grows in humid tropical and subtropical climates on rocky slopes and in primary forests at elevations of 550 to 1200 meters. It has aerial roots so it can attach itself to various formations in order to grow from there. The species in the genus produces numerous flower clusters and the color of the flower is a crimson, sometimes obscurely and transversely banded with paler lines; beneath uniformly orange in the center and redder at the margin, hence its name, The Scarlet Renanthera. The Renanthera Coccinea orchid is illustrated and listed under the title, (Chinese Scarlet-Flowered Air Plant) in Sir Joseph Paxton's, The Gardner and Practical Florist published in 1843 by Richard Groombridge, vol., 2, pg. 372. and it is also illustrated and listed under that name in Paxton's, Magazine Magazine of Botany, published in 1938 by Wm. S. Orr & Co., 4th Vol., pg. 49. This original hand-colorord colored etching entitled, Renanthera Coccinea, Scarlet Air Plant was etched by J. Watts based upon a design created by the British artist, M. Hart. It was published in 1828 by James Ridgway, London for Sydenham Teak Edwards "The Botanical Register", Vol. 14, pl.1131.
