View of the Castle Keep, Halaincourt (Vue du donjon d'Halaincourt) is important as both an artistic work and as a historical document. Lithography was not invented in France, but it was the French who first recognized the vast potential of this new medium as a fine art form. Beginning around 1810 such great artists as Delacroix, Gericault, Boilly, Vernet, Charlet and many others were bringing the lithograph to the forefront. Such was the high regard for this new form of art that the Restoration Salons held annual exhibitions in lithography from 1817 to 1824.
