Zepherin Belliard (Zepherin-Felix-Jean-Marius Belliard)

Zepherin Belliard - Hortense

Hortense

Zepherin Belliard's original lithograph, Hortense is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris by Delpech in 1824. It is a major, original example of French portrait lithography from its Golden Age and the art of Zepherin-Felix-Jean-Marius Belliard.

Hortense was born in Paris in 1783. She was the daughter of no less than the Empress Josephine. As a young woman Hortense was often seen arguing with her step father; Napoleon Bonaparte. She married Louis Bonaparte and was crowned the Queen of Holland. She was also the mother of Napoleon III.

Title: Hortense
Artist: Belliard, Zepherin-Felix-Jean-Marius, 'Zepherin Belliard' (Born, Marseille, 1798 - Died, c. 1843)
Date: 1824
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Delpech, Paris
Note: Zepherin-Felix-Jean-Marius Belliard: Zepherin Belliard was active between 1820 and 1830. He was one of the fine early masters in this field. Belliard created at least fifty contemporary portraits of distinguished Europeans. Zepherin Belliard's lithographic art in portraiture, in fact, gained him full membership to the Restoration Salon in 1824. Officially, the Salon listed the portrait lithograph as being of the highest classification.
Of the early lithographic printers and publishers, the names of Delpech and Charles Motte stand foremost. Delpech's Paris establishment was both a lithographic studio and a print selling gallery. During the 1820's, it became a major centre for both artists and patrons -- much like Rudolph Ackermann's London studio was at the same time. Lithographs bearing Delpech's mark were a constant in the initial Salon exhibitions.
Lithography was not invented in France, but it was the French who first recognized the vast potential of this new medium as a fine art form. Led by such masters as Delacroix, Gericault, Boilly, Vernet and Charlet, a host of great artists were bringing the lithograph to the forefront between 1810 and 1835. Such was the high regard in France for this new form of art that the Restoration Salons began holding annual exhibitions in lithography as early as 1817.
Provenance: This original lithograph entitled, Hortense was formerly in the Latta Collection and bearing his number, # 2262. Lata was perhaps the most foremost collector of Napoleonica in history. In his collection one could find such items as Napoleon's Coronation robes. It took Sotheby's over two weeks to auction his complete collection in the 1920's.
Note: Hortense was born in Paris in 1783. She was the daughter of no less than the Empress Josephine. As a young woman Hortense was often seen arguing with her step father; Napoleon Bonaparte. She married Louis Bonaparte and was crowned the Queen of Holland. She was also the mother of Napoleon III.
