Note: The Graphic, London: A 19th and early 20th century British illustrated newspaper, The Graphic was founded in London by William Luson Thomas (1830-1900). It was first launched in 1869 and ceased publication in 1932 when they changed the name to The National Graphic. It was originally published as a weekly illustrated newspaper that covered British news, and as their circulation increased it featured European and North American content. Artists such as, Arthur Boyd Houghton, Edward John Gregory, Frank Brangwyn, Edmund Blampied, and others were commissioned by The Graphic to create illustrations of current international events that covered a diversity subjects. It was a higher toned, better illustrated paper featuring political issues, domestic and foreign news, literature, politics, exploration, sciences, music, the theatre, the visual arts, etc. During the second half of the nineteenth century, periodicals, journals and magazines such as 'Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper', 'Every Saturday', 'The Aldine' and 'Harper's Weekly', in the United States, and 'The Illustrated London News', 'The Illustrated London Almanack', and 'The Graphic', in England, created pictorial journalism on a grand scale. Wood engraving (invented around 1780) at last made it possible for publishers to print images and words on the same page without the extravagant costs of producing etchings or engravings from metal plates. From about 1850 engraving upon wood became the dominant means of distributing information along with pictorial imagery, and continued in this role until around 1900, when the practical application of photography took control. This original engraving entitled, "Ye Christmas Box" is a full page advertisement for Swan Soap published in the Christmas issue of The Graphic, London in 1900. It depicts an image of a woman and a man riding a coach in the snow. There is a giant swan soap box in the luggage compartment. Below, you will fine a listing of 19th century trade cards advertising various soap products.
