Raphael Soyer

Raphael Soyer - Mother and Child

Mother and Child

Raphael Soyer's original lithograph, "Mother and Child" is printed upon pure rag paper bearing the 'Rives' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published around 1970 in a sole, signed edition of one hundred and fifty impressions in New York in a large folder which is provided. This impression is signed by the artist in pencil and numbered, '37/150 along the lower margin'. Until about 1960, all Raphael Soyer's lithographic art was black and white. After that date he frequently created colour lithographs and proved himself a master of this medium like any other. "Mother and Child" is a striking, original example of the lithographic art created by the twentieth century American artist, Raphael Soyer. Within this folder Raphael Soyer wrote these telling words;

"Village East is the result of my seven years' living on the Lower East Side. I tried to get the feeling of the area .... bearded, long-haired young men .... white mothers with their Negro babies against the background of drab walls bearing Fall-Out shelter signs." * Raphael Soyer

Title: Mother and Child
Artist: Soyer, Raphael (Tombov, Russia, 1899 - New York, 1987)
Date: c. 1970
Medium: Original Lithograph
Edition: Limited edition of one hundred and fifty signed impressions, numbered 37/150.
Note: Raphael Soyer is undoubtedly one of America's most famous twentieth century artists. He emigrated to New York City at the age of ten and shortly thereafter studied at the Art Students League while supporting himself and his family by working in factories and selling newspapers. Recognition thankfully came quickly to Raphael Soyer and in 1917 he published his first original lithograph. Raphael Soyer went on to become one of the greatest chroniclers of life in the Depression era and beyond. A full member of the National Academy, Raphael Soyer's original lithographs and paintings are included in most major American and international collections.
  One writer states,
"The glamour and gaiety of city life or the impressive vistas and mighty skyscrapers that had been attractive subjects for New York painters were ignored by Soyer as he turned toward other kinds of realities and created his compassionate images of less fortunate people. ... Raphael Soyer's sympathetic portrayals of the misfortunate and indigent were untouched by the doctrinaire or harsh commentaries of some of his artist friends." *
