Raphael Soyer

Raphael Soyer - Father Memories Portfolio

Father (Memories Portfolio)

Raphael Soyer's original lithograph, "Father" was created by the twentieth century American artist, in 1969 and published by the "Associated American Artists" for the "Memories" portfolio, a set of ten large lithographs printed in the sole limited edition of one hundred and fifty impressions. It hails from the collection of Roger Trlak and is signed and numbered by Soyer in pencil. Raphael Soyer dedicates a number of pages to the life of his father in "Self-Revealment: A Memoir". In fact the original drawing upon which this lithograph is based is reproduced opposite page 24. ** "Father" was also published in a large folder in which Soyer has written these words,

"... Now that I can look back upon all this with some comprehension, I can see ... that my father was not meant to be a businessman. He was a naive poet ...a romantic hero-worshipper. He loved pictures, statues, monuments ... It was from him that we first heard the names of Rembrandt, Raphael, Michelangelo.... The folder is included with this impression of "Father".

Note: Raphael Soyer is undoubtedly one of America's most famous twentieth century artists. He emigrated to New York City at the age of ten and shortly thereafter studied at the Art Students League while supporting himself and his family by working in factories and selling newspapers. Recognition thankfully came quickly to Soyer and in 1917 he published his first original lithograph. Raphael Soyer went on to become one of the greatest chroniclers of life in the Depression era and beyond. A full member of the National Academy, Soyer's original etchings, lithographs and paintings are included in most major American and international collections.

One writer states,

"The glamour and gaiety of city life or the impressive vistas and mighty skyscrapers that had been attractive subjects for New York painters were ignored by Soyer as he turned toward other kinds of realities and created his compassionate images of less fortunate people. ... Soyer's sympathetic portrayals of the misfortunate and indigent were untouched by the doctrinaire or harsh commentaries of some of his artist friends." *

In 1969 the Associated Artists of New York commissioned Raphael Soyer to create a portfolio of lithographs. This resulted in the "Memories" portfolio, a set of ten large original lithographs printed in a signed, limited edition of 150 impressions. At the same time Soyer's autobiographical book, "Self-Revealment: A Memoir", was being completed, and often his writing and lithographic art dealt with comparable elements.
Provenance: From the collection of Roger Trlak. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.
