Samuel William Reynolds & Sir Joshua Reynolds

Samuel William Reynolds and Sir Joshua Reynolds- Ugolino

Ugolino

Samuel William Reynolds was regularly commissioned to engrave the famous paintings and drawings of Sir Joshua Reynolds (no relation) into the demanding medium of mezzotint during his career. Such is the case with this original mezzotint, entitled, "Ugolino". This S. W. Reynolds mezzotint engraving is printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with wide, full margins and bears the title and full address of the publisher 'Hodgson, Boys & Graves, Pall Mall' along the lower margin. This is a fine, original example of the famous mezzotint art created by the British mezzotint artist, Samuel William Reynolds.

Ugolino della Gherardesca, Count of Pisa, attempted to gain supreme power in his native city by forming an alliance with Giovanni Visconti, around 1270. The plot failed and Ugolino joined the Florentines, eventually forcing the Pisans to restore his territories. In 1284, he again deserted the Pisans in their war against Genoa. Four years later, Ugolino, along with his two sons and two grandsons, were cast into the tower prison of Gualandi.
