Note:	Samuel William Reynolds: One of the best painters and mezzotint engravers of the early nineteenth century, S. W. Reynolds studied art in London under C. H. Hodges and John Raphael Smith. Samuel Reynolds's first engraved portrait (a study of George III when still Prince of Wales) bears the date of 1794. He began exhibiting his art at the Royal Academy in 1797 and continued to show his work there until 1827. Reynolds's mezzotints were also greatly admired by the French and were exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1810. Altogether, he mezzotinted nearly three hundred and fifty portraits.
	Samuel William Reynolds became famous for the excellence of his mezzotints. Few engravers have used this complex medium with such dramatic results. In, The Honourable John Clerk, Lord Eldin, for instance, he combines strong combinations of light and shade with a masterful use of texture. It's small wonder that he was appointed, "Mezzotint Engraver to King George III". Reynolds was also offered a knighthood for his art but for some unknown reason turned it down.
	Among Samuel William Reynolds's most esteemed portraits in mezzotint are, George III, The countess of Oxford, the Duchess of Bedford, William Pitt, Lord Eldin, Napoleon, Thomas Campbell, David Garrick and the Countess of Bedford. Among Reynolds's students in mezzotint were David Lucas, Samuel Cousins and Georges Maile.
Note:	John Clerk (Penicuik, 1728 - Eldin, 1812) was a Scottish artist, author and Parliamentarian. He first became a merchant in Edinburgh before accepting various positions in the Government. His most famous literary work was, Naval Tactics, which appears to have given rise to much controversy. Throughout his career, john Clerk evinced a strong inclination for drawing, and most particularly, etching from nature. In the eighteenth century, few British artists devoted much effort to etching. Thus Clerk's landscape etchings are often seen as important precursors to the etching revival of the mid nineteenth century.
