Note:	Samuel Phillips: Very little is known concerning the life of Samuel Phillips (London, Active, 1790 - 1810). Engravings from his hand were mostly commissioned by London's leading publishers, John (1719-1804) and Josiah Boydell (1752-1817), and Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834). As well as William Hogarth's, Taste in High Life, Samuel Phillips engraved such plates as Meditation (1802), The Birth of Otway (1804), and The Birth of Shakespeare (1804), after Richard Westall published by R. Ackermann. A few of his engraved plates after Maria Cosway include The Guardian Angel (1803), Adriadne (1801), Innocence (1801), and Bacchus (1801), also published by R. Ackermann. Samuel Phillips also engraved plates after Luigi Schiavonetti, Henry Singleton, Benjamin West, and others.
	William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
	Training first as an engraver, William Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
	Taste in High Life: Samuel Phillips's original stipple engraving entitled, Taste in High Life is based upon a 1742 painting by William Hogarth. In the early 1800's Boydell acquired Hogarth's original engraved plates and printed a posthumous edition from them. He also commissioned artists to engrave several further plates after Hogarth's most famous paintings. These include such works as Shrimps (engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi) and Taste in High Life (engraved by Samuel Phillips). Taste in High Life is a brilliant attack upon the fashions and decorations of the day. In the early nineteenth century such satirical masters as George Cruikshank and William Heath would further exploit this rich field. Most of the imagery in Taste in High Life is self explanatory. To the left a Black page boy sits on the table with a doll in his hand. A fashionably dressed young woman strokes his chin as if he were a pet. To the centre an elderly woman in a tent-like dress accepts a thimble-sized cup of tea from a man dressed in the latest French fashion. On the floor and dressed in the latest livery a monkey peruses the dinner menu which includes such delicacies as "Ducks Tongues" and "Rabbit's Ears". Perhaps the end result of all these absurdities of fashion is seen in the large painting on the wall. One cannot go beyond such a fashionable innovation.
