The painting upon which this large engraving is based was created by William Hogarth for his favourite charity, the Foundling Hospital. It was jointly engraved and etched by William Hogarth and Luke Sullivan, an etcher who worked for Hogarth on a number of commissions during the 1750's. "Moses Brought to Pharaoh's Daughter" is ,of course, based upon the Biblical text engraved under the image: "And the child grew & she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter & he became her son. And she called his name Moses."

The scene depicts the boy Moses being entrusted by his mother, dressed as a nurse, to the care of the Princess of Egypt. She accepts payment for her services from a stern treasurer. Immediately behind his face is a large column where a faintly comic face has been drawn. Moses stares at the elegantly attired Princess but stays with his mother. The Princess affectionately extends her hand to the boy, yet, at the base of her chair, a small but sinister crocodile threatens. To the left, two servants engage in serious gossip.

	William Hogarth (London, 1697 - 1764): The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from "The Harlot's Progress", "Marriage a la Mode", "The Four Stages of Cruelty", "Four Prints of an Election", "The Four Times of the Day" and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
	Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, "A Harlot's Progress" (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
	Luke Sullivan (Louth, Ireland, c. 1730 - London): An Irish etcher and line engraver of satirical, religious, military and genre subjects, Luke Sullivan came to London as a young man and studied printmaking techniques under Thomas Major. His first published engravings were landscapes and topographical views, either after the drawings of his contemporaries or of his own design.
	In the early 1750's Luke Sullivan became a primary assistant to William Hogarth. Hogarth commissioned Sullivan to engrave a number of his compositions including, "Moses Brought to Pharaoh's Daughter" or, "The Infant Moses" (1752), "Paul Before Felix" (1752), "Satire on False Perspective" and "The March to Finchley" (1761). It is reported that Sullivan lived a somewhat dissolute life and died in Piccadilly.

Condition:	Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as printed for the Heath edition in 1822. This original impression of "Moses Brought to Pharaoh's Daughter" contains some faint foxing in the outer margins, well away from the actual engraving. Else, it is a strongly printed impression and in excellent condition throughout.
