Thomas Moran & John Frederick Kensett

Thomas Moran and John Frederick Kensett - Lake George

Lake George

Thomas Moran - Lake George - Original Etching

"Lake George" represents a most interesting, original etching. Executed by America's finest nineteenth century landscape etcher, Thomas Moran, it is based upon a famous painting by a major Hudson River School artist, John Frederick Kensett. Originally painted in 1869, Kensett's "Lake George" is now on permanent display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

A particular challenge for Thomas Moran was to convey the size and depth of the painting, which measures almost four by six feet, in an etching of about six by eight inches. This he clearly achieves by in part combining fine details with dramatic areas of light and shade.

Thomas Moran's "Lake George" was published in 1887 by Charles Scribner's Sons in a limited edition of 500 impressions for their four volume set entitled, "Cyclopedia of Painters and Paintings".

Note: Thomas Moran: Now considered the greatest master of the American etching revival, Thomas Moran immigrated with his family to Maryland at the age of seven. He was apprenticed to the Philadelphia wood engraving firm of Scattergood and Telfer, working there from 1853 to 1855. During this time he taught himself to paint in both water colors and oils.
In 1862 Thomas Moran went to England in the company of his brother, Edward Moran, a marine painter. There they studied the art of such masters as J. M. W. Turner and Claude Lorrain. Turner, in particular, had a long lasting effect on Moran’s art. Thomas Moran settled permanently in New York in 1872 and spent his summers at his country home in East Hampton, Long Island. A number of his original etchings depict scenes close to this home.
The art of Thomas Moran first received widespread attention as a result of his 1871 trip to the Yellowstone region with the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His spectacular art from this expedition was exhibited in Washington DC and directly influenced Congress to establish Yellowstone National Park. Moran made a further trip to the territory of Wyoming in 1879. One of Wyoming’s greatest landmarks, Mount Moran, is named after him.
Thomas Moran was elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1884. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Artists’ Fund Society, the American Water Color Society, the New York Etching Club and the Society of American Etchers. His paintings and etchings are housed in most major American museums.
Moran made his first original etching in 1856. He took up etching again in 1878 and during the following decade produced almost one hundred valuable works of art in this medium, both after his own designs and those of his contemporaries.
John Frederick Kensett: A leading Hudson River School painter, John Frederick Kensett studied art in England, France and Italy from 1840 to 1848. Upon his return to the United States he established a studio in the New York University Building and, a year later, was elected a National Academician. In 1870 J. F. Kensett was appointed a member of the first Board of Trustees for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Well travelled, John Frederick Kensett painted scenes in West Virginia, Ohio, Maine, Colorado and the Rockies. His most familiar scenes, however, are the Hudson River Valley, the Adirondack Mountains and the Lake George area of upstate New York.
