Amos: Selected text that is included with this original woodcut reads; "Amos 2:4-5: from a small village in Judean hills around 760 B. C.E. there appeared Amos, the first of the great literary prophets who were to give moral and ethical shape to the Jewish religion. The God of Amos was all powerful, but he was also a God of Justice who would protect those who obeyed his moral law and would destroy those who did not.

The prophesies of Amos are filled with the metaphor of fire as the instrument of God's vengeance against the unrighteous, not only the enemies of Israel, but Israel itself:
“Because they have rejected the law of the Lord,
“And not kept his statues,
“After which their fathers did walk.
“So will I send a fire upon Judah,
“And it shall devour the places of Jerusalem/”
