Walther Klemm

Walther Klemm - Tiger

Tiger

Walther Klemm's original lithograph, "Tiger" clearly shows his art at its finest. With its brilliant use of light and shade the artist has perfectly captured both the power and potential danger of this admirable beast in this original lithograph. Today the art of Walther Klemm is included in public museums in Augsburg, Leipzig, Magdeburg and Prague.

This original lithograph entitled, "Tiger" is printed upon tanned wove paper and with very large margins as published in Weimar around 1920 and is signed in pencil along the lower right margin by the Germa artist, Walther Klemm.

Title: Tiger
Artist: Klemm, Walther (Karlsbad, 1883 - Weimar, 1957)
Date: c. 1920
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note:

“Beginning with highly finished and extremely competent realistic subjects, Walther Klemm's design gradually broadened out into black and white impressionism. ... The variety of his expression, the subtlety of simplification and the luminosity of his black and white are wholly admirable.” *

Walther Klemm: A major painter and printmaker in both Austria and Germany, Walther Klemm studied art in Vienna, under Hodler and Amiet. As early as 1903 he began creating both lithographs and woodcuts in Austria's capital city. It was here he met and became lifelong friends with another influential printmaker, Emil Orlik. Several years later Walther Klemm moved to Prague and then to Dachau. In 1913 he settled permanently in Weimar and became a professor at that city's Art Academy (Weimarer Kunsthochschule).
Walther Klemm's many great woodcuts and lithographs were published both as individual works of art (such as this original lithograph) and as illustrations to fine livres d'artiste. In this latter category he illustrated such great works as Don Quixote, Til Ulenspeigel, Reineke Fuchs (1928), Flaubert's St. Julien and Goethe's Faust.
Edition: Tiger, like the majority of Walther Klemm's original lithographs and woodcuts, bears no edition numeration. It is known, however, that most of his graphic art not issued in books was published in small numbers. Also, due to the very large margins of this impression of Tiger, it is quite possibly an artist's proof impression.
