Man on Stilts

James Joseph Kearns's "Man on Stilts" is a fine original example of his etched art. Using deeply etched lines James Kearns has here fashioned a haunting and powerful image dominated by the diagonals of the poles and by the surrounding space.

This original etching is printed upon thick, white wove paper and with full margins as published in New York in 1968 by the "Associated American Artists" in an edition of two hundred and fifty impressions. It is signed, titled and numbered, 116/250, by James Joseph Kearns in pencil along the lower margin. Both, 'The Fine Art Museum at the Western Carolina University' and the 'Butler Institute of American Art Museum' list an impression of "Man on Stilts" in their collection.

Note: James Joseph Kearns 'James Kearns': An outstanding modern American sculptor, painter and printmaker, James Kearns studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University and at the University of Chicago from 1946 to 1951. Kearns's first one man exhibition took place in New York in 1956 and since that time his sculptures, paintings and etchings have been included in exhibitions at the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts and at the Whitney Museum in New York. In 2006, the Rider University Art Gallery, Lawrenceville, New Jersey held an exhibition that showcased a retrospective of Fifty-Plus Years of James Kearn's drawings and paintings. Museums that have purchased his art include the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. The 'Fine Art Museum at the Western Carolina University' lists an impression of "Man on Stilts" in their collection. The 'Butler Institute of American Art Museum' also lists an impression of "Man on Stilts" in their collection, Accession No. 968-P-213. In 1960, Kearns became a professor at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He has also illustrated a number of important books, including, Can these Bones Live (1960) and The Heart of Beethoven (1962).
  Man on Stilts is a superb original example of James Kearns's etched art. Using deeply etched lines Kearns has here fashioned a haunting and powerful image dominated by the diagonals of the poles and by the surrounding space. Man on Stilts was commissioned by the Associated Artists of New York in 1968 in a sole limited edition of 250 impressions. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the A.A.A. commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and others. During the 1960's, major contributing artists included Jack Levine, Chaim Koppelman, Joseph Margulies and James Joseph Kearns.
