Brussels is the capital of Belgium and of the province of Brabant. It is situated on the small River Senne. It is rich in monuments and works of art. A few of its important institutions comprise of a university, an academy of science and the fine arts and polytechnic school; one of the finest observatories in Europe; a conservatorium of music; and its gallery which contains some of the finest specimens of Flemish art. The Brussels Town Hall, also known as The Hotel de Ville or the Hotel de Ville de Bruxelles is a Gothic masterpiece that dominates the famous Grand Place Square. It was built at the turn of the 15th century.

Note: Sir Ernest George: An eminent nineteenth century architect, Sir Ernest George was also highly respected for his original etchings and watercolours. He studied art and architecture at the Royal Academy Schools, London, and created his first set of etchings in 1873 ('Etchings on the Moselle'). During the following years Ernest George etched and painted many fine architectural views in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Italy.
  Ernest George was a full member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers (1881), the Royal British Artists (1889) and the prestigious Royal Academy (1917). He was also knighted for his contributions to art and architecture in 1912. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, own collections of Sir Ernest George's etchings.
  Ernest George authored and contributed original etchings to a variety of historical landscape and architectural books such as Etchings on the Mosel with Descriptive Letterpress, published by John Murray,(1873) Etchings on the Loire and in the Sourth of France: with descriptive letterpress, published by John Murray, (1875 ), Etchings in Belgium: with descriptive letterpress, published by Seeley Jackson & Halliday (1878 first edition), Etchings of Old London: with descriptive Letterpress, published by The Fine Art Society, New Bond Street, (1884) and other important contributions. He also contributed original etchings to such publications as Etchers and Etchers and The Portfolio edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892.
  This original etching is typical of Ernest George's talent as an architectural etcher. In particular, his subtle rendering of details and use of light and shade made him a most sought after artist.
