Robert Cruikshank - Monstrosities of 1827

Monstrosities of 1827

In Robert Cruikshank's Monstrosities of 1827, the artist delineates the excesses of contemporary attire to its fullest. Waists have been reduced to wasp-like thimbles and ladies' heads have all but disappeared under a vast and layered assemblage of bows, branches and flowers. Even a young child and two bedecked dogs have fallen victim to the vagaries of 'the mode'. Monstrosities of 1827 is regarded as Issac Robert Cruikshank's finest satirical etching. After viewing this wonderful work of art one should never take anything in the world of fashion seriously. Undoubtedly the most famous creations of satire bearing the Cruikshank name were the Monstrosities, which were published annually from 1816 to 1828. Both Robert and George Cruikshank participated in these amazing observations of the latest fashions.
