Leonard Baskin worked upon a portfolio of ten original woodcuts to illustrate Shakespeare's classic drama, Othello In 1973. As is usual with Baskin's great art they are penetrating psychological studies, Othello Young hails from this series. It is printed upon fine, Japanese paper and with wide, full margins as published at the Gehenna Press in a limited edition of two hundred s. Othello is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the American artist, Leonard Baskin.

Note: Leonard Baskin: A most distinguished American sculptor, etcher, wood engraver and illustrator Leonard Baskin studied art at New York University (1939 - 41), Yale (1941 - 43), the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris (1950) and the Academy of Fine Arts, Florence (1951). Baskin's first woodcut was created in 1948. Since that time he produced over eight hundred woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings, lithographs and monotypes. His prints and sculpture have been shown world wide, including one-man exhibitions in San Francisco, Washington, New York, Toronto, London, Belfast, Vienna and Mannheim. Leonard Baskin received many honours; a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. His art is in such public collections as the Smithsonian Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery, London, the British Museum, and the Vatican Museums, Rome.
  Leonard Baskin first gained widespread notice in 1951. This was the year he founded the Gehenna Press, one of the leading private press of the latter twentieth century. Through the Gehenna Press, Baskin published an amazing variety of fine limited edition books and portfolios, most illustrated with his original graphic art. In 1973 Leonard Baskin worked upon a portfolio of ten woodcuts to illustrate Shakespeare's classic drama, Othello. (This was his second and final set of prints to illustrate Shakespeare as, in 1970, he created a set of twelve etchings for Titus Andronicus.) The ten woodcuts were printed at the Gehenna Press on Japanese paper. As is usual with Baskin's great art they are penetrating psychological studies. Othello Young represents an unforgettable example from this series.
