Leonard Baskin's original wood engraving, "Gustave Courbet" was published by The Gehenna Press, Massachusetts in 1969. This engraving hails from a series entitled, the "Laus Pictorum", consisting of a number of portraits of nineteenth century artists created by this American artist. Several studies were etched, but the method used for most of the portraits was wood engraving. The edition consisted of five hundred and twenty five singed and numbered prints. A handful of artist's proofs were pulled before the edition. "Gustave Courbet" is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the 20th century artist, Leonard Baskin.

Note: Leonard Baskin is clearly one of America's most influential graphic artists and sculptors. He studied art at New York University (1939 - 41), Yale (1941 - 43), the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris (1950) and the Academy of Fine Arts, Florence (1951). Baskin's first woodcut was created in 1948. Since that time he produced over eight hundred woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings, lithographs and monotypes. His prints and sculpture have been shown world wide, including one-man exhibitions in San Francisco, Washington, New York, Toronto, London, Belfast, Vienna and Mannheim. Leonard Baskin received many honours, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish Cultural Achievement Award. His art is in such public collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, and the Vatican Museums.
  Leonard Baskin first gained widespread notice in 1951. This was the year he founded the Gehenna Press, perhaps the most famous private press of the latter twentieth century. Through the Gehenna Press, Baskin published an amazing variety of fine limited edition books, most illustrated with his original graphic art. Baskin also issued many of these fine prints on an individual basis.
  This original wood engraving depicting the portrait of Gustave Courbet hails from the "Laus Pictorum", a series of portrait studies depicting 19th century artists, published by Baskin in 1969. Several portraits were etched, but the method used for most of the portraits was wood engraving. The edition consisted of 525 singed and numbered prints. A handful of artist's proofs were pulled before the edition.

Condition: Printed upon specially made, pure paper by the Strathmore Paper Company and with full margins. Signed in pencil by Leonard Baskin under the image. It is a beautifully printed and in excellent condition throughout. This wood engraving is not numbered; which indicates that it is an artist proof, pulled before the regular edition. This original wood engraving of Gustave Courbet represents a prime example of the famous portrait art by Leonard Baskin.
