Francesco Bartolozzi's original engraving entitled, "Large Head of a Man, 'In His Majesty's Collection'" is based upon a design created by the Italian Renaissance artist, Leonardo da Vinci. It is printed upon late 18th century wove paper and with full margins as etched by Francesco Bartolozzi in 1796 for John Chamberlaine's, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci", and bears the text; "From the Original Drawing by Leonardo da Vinci', "Engraved by F. Bartolozzi R.A. Historical Engraver to his Majesty", "In His Majesty's Collection" and the publication line, "Published as the Act directs, March 1.1796 by I. Chamberlaine" under the image. This portrait perfectly illustrates Francesco Bartolozzi's famous stipple technique. Stippling relies upon masses of small dots or flicks to create an image, rather than etched or engraved lines. Francesco Bartolozzi introduced this method to Britain and became its most influential practitioner. Created in 1796, almost entirely in stipple, "Large Head of a Man" shows both the strength and subtlety of this eighteenth century, tonal manner of engraving. The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco includes an impression of Francesco Bartolozzi's "Large Head of a Man" in its permanent collection (Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts: 1963.30.36206)

Note: Francesco Bartolozzi: Born in Florence, Italy in 1727, Francesco Bartolozzi is undoubtedly England’s most famous stipple engraver of the late eighteenth century. He studied under the Florentine artists, Ignazio Hugford (1703 – 1775) and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692 – 1778). In 1748 Bartolozzi went to Venice and worked for the engraver and print dealer Joseph Wagner (1706 – 1786) where he began his career engraving plates after the Italian masters. Then in 1764 Francesco Bartolozzi was invited by the King of England, King George III (1738 – 1820) to come to London to engrave the drawings of Guercino ‘Giovanni Francesco Barbieri’ (1591 – 1666), Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527 – 1596) and other Italian artists in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Shortly after, he was appointed ‘Engraver to the King’. In 1768, Bartolozzi received the honour of being the first engraver to gain full membership into the prestigious Royal Academy. In 1802, and after nearly forty years in London, Bartolozzi was offered the prominent position as the director of the National Academy in Lisbon. He remained in Lisbon until his death in 1815.
  A new printmaking technique had recently come to the fore in England at this time and, although Francesco Bartolozzi made no claim to its invention, his name is forever linked with the 'stipple' engraving. Briefly, a stipple engraving is created by using masses of flicks or dots rather than solid lines, making it a more tonal composition. This is clearly seen in this original stipple engraving entitled "Large Head of a Man". More than any other artist, Francesco Bartolozzi mastered this subtle medium.
  Francesco Bartolozzi quickly recognized that this very demanding method of original printmaking was best suited for decorative works and portraits as well as scenes displaying flesh tones. He thus set up his famous London workshop which published renderings of either sentimental or mythological subjects, with such well known painters as Francis Wheatley (1747 - 1801), Angelica Kauffmann (1741 - 1807), Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727 - 1785) and Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734 - 1808) specifically creating designs for him to engrave. Bartolozzi's success with the stipple was enormous. He was one of the first engravers granted a full membership to the Royal Academy, and in the last decades of the eighteenth century, a large following of English and transplanted Italian students sat in his studio to learn his techniques. His students included such fine artists as Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840), and Benedetto Pastorini (1741 – 1839).(Some of his students later engraved the popular Cries of London series.) Stippling, however, was destined to live a very short life. It was extremely laborious and time consuming and soon gave way to the more convenient and mass-produced forms of printmaking in the nineteenth century.
  "Large Head of a Man" 'In His Majesty's Collection' is an outstanding example of Bartolozzi's stipple technique. Stippling is used almost exclusively throughout the entire composition to create strong tonal values and delicate hues. Created in 1796, it based upon a design created by the Italian Renaissance artist, Leonardo da Vinci for John Chamberlaine's, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci", and bears the text; "From the Original Drawing by Leonardo da Vinci', "Engraved by F. Bartolozzi R.A. Historical Engraver to his Majesty", "In His Majesty's Collection" and the publication line, "Published as the Act directs, March 1.1796 by I. Chamberlaine" under the image. This portrait depicts a study of a man scowling at the viewer. The following three leading museums include an impression of Francesco Bartolozzi's "Large Head of a Man" in their permanent collections; The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts: 1963.30.36206), The Royal Academy (Their listing describes it as "Head of a clean-shaven man almost full face, 1 March 1796), Record number 03/2466, and the British Museum (listed under "A study of the head of man"), Registration number: 1925,0422.2.4.
  Leonardo da Vinci: The true 'Renaissance' man, Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, an engineer and a scientist. In 1472, Leonardo da Vinci enrolled as a painter in the fraternity of St. Luke in Florence. There he served his apprenticeship with Verrocchio. He moved to Milan around 1481 and remained there until 1499, working mostly at the court of Duke Ludovico Sforza.
  Leonardo's completed paintings are relatively few. His numerous drawings, however, display aspects and ideas of one of the world's most astute and inventive minds. His legacy to the arts is immense for it was Leonardo da Vinci who established the concept of the artist as a creative thinker and not merely a craftsman.
  John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine (London, 1745 - 1812) was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
  In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
  The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
