Artist: Holloway, Charles Edward 'Charles Holloway' (Christchurch, Hampshire, 1838 - London, 1897)
Date: 1894
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: The Studio, London

Note: Charles Edward Holloway 'Charles Holloway': A nineteenth century British landscape and marine artist, Charles Edward Holloway was equally accomplished in the mediums of painting, watercolour, etching and lithography. He studied art at Leigh's Studio, London, along with such fellow students as Charles Green and Fred Walker. He then went to work under William Morris, designing stained glass for him until 1866. Afterwards, Holloway devoted himself entirely to landscapes and marine subjects and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society from 1867 to 1895. He was elected an Associate of the prestigious Royal Institute in 1875 and a full member in 1879.
Quite late in his career, Holloway began to experiment with new forms of art. He was one of the first English artists to incorporate Impressionist elements in his art and, around 1890, he exhibited a kinship with the then controversial art of Whistler. This is most evident in his late lithographs and etchings where atmospheric effects dominate. Not only in his beautiful arrangements of compositional elements but in his choice of scenes was there an affinity between Charles Holloway and James McNeill Whistler, as both artists, during the 1890's, frequently delineated Thames views, depictions of Chelsea and scenes of Venice. An accomplished nineteenth century artist, Charles Edward Holloway was thus one of the pioneers exploring concerns which would prevail in twentieth century art.
This original lithograph entitled, Thames River, London was published by The Studio, in London. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries this journal was the leading British arts publication. Issues often contained original graphic art by such great etchers and lithographers as James McNeill Whistler, Sir Frank Brangwyn, Joseph Pennell and many others. Charles Edward Holloway was commissioned to create at least three original lithographs for The Studio.
