Istvan Zador

Istvan Zador - St. Martin's Cathedral Mainz Cathedral Mainzer Dom

St. Martin's Cathedral, Mainz (Mainz Cathedral, Mainzer Dom)

Istvan Zador's original soft ground etching, St. Martin's Cathedral, Mainz dates from 1922. Although Istvan (also called, Stephen) Zador was a Hungarian artist and spent most of his career in Budapest, he lived in Munich during the early 1920's and etched major German landmarks in such cities as Bremen, Nuremberg, Ulm and Mainz.

Saint Martin's Cathedral ('Mainzer Dom', in German) is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Germany. Construction began in the year 975, reaching its present form in the 14th century. The city of Mainz underwent extensive bombardment during the Second World War. Mainz Cathedral, however, suffered only minor damage.

Istvan Zador's large and impressive etching depicts both the cathedral and the town square at its front. The square's fountain is seen to the lower left.
