Note: Bertrand Zadig: Unfortunately little biographical information seems to exist on Bertrand Zadig. It is not presently known when and where he was born and educated, however, a number of facts are known about his work. He was a well known illustrator of books (particularly in the medium of the woodcut). Some of his illustrations may be found in such books as Critical Woodcuts (1926) and Twelve Portraits of the French Revolution (1928). For a number of years Bertrand Zadig also worked as a free-lance artist for the New Yorker and other major magazines.
Saint-Just was created for Twelve Portraits of the French Revolution. The published book also contained Bertrand Zadig woodcut portrayals of such notables as The King, Mirabeau, Danton, Robespierre and Marat, all composed in a striking Art-Deco style. This particular impression is a signed proof on mulberry paper. In all probability the book contained only reproductions of these signed originals.
