Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi - Woman seated in Front of her Mirror

Woman Seated in Front of her Mirror (Kyodai) and Wishing to See a Kabuki Play

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's original woodcut, "Woman Seated in Front of her Mirror (Kyodai) and Wishing to See a Kabuki Play", hails from his series entitled, "A Collection of Desires". It is printed upon nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published by Inoue Shigehei in 1878. "Woman Seated in Front of her Mirror..." is an important example of the portrait art created by the 19th century Japanese artist, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.

Title: Woman Seated in Front of her Mirror (Kyodai) and Wishing to See a Kabuki Play
Artist: Yoshitoshi, Tsukioka (Japan, 1839 - 1892)
Date: January 04, 1878
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Publisher: Inoue Shigehei
Series: A Collection of Desires
Note: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi: The undisputed master of Meiji period art dating between (1868 & 1912), Yoshitoshi's woodcuts are now ranked beside those of Hiroshige, Hokusai and his former master, Kuniyoshi. Yoshitoshi became a star pupil of Kuniyoshi at the young age of eleven and, in 1853, designed his first published woodcut print at age fourteen. Until 1860, Yoshitoshi's art was influenced by the dominant Utagawa style, but after that date he broke out into a striking form of artistic expression that was all his own. Daring colour combinations combined with dramatic and expressive postures began to lead the way, quickly influencing an entire era of Japanese art. This is all the more remarkable when one considers that through most of his life Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was continually afflicted with serious eye disorders and mental breakdowns. At the time of his death, Yoshitoshi's fame was so widespread that he had over eighty recorded pupils.
Deservedly, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi is now one of the most sought after of Japanese woodcut artists. At auction it is not unusual for fine specimens of his most famous works to reach the five thousand dollar mark.
Scholars point to the last years of the 1870's decade as being among Yoshitoshi's most creative years. To this time belongs some of his greatest series such as, Mirrors of Famous Japanese Generals, Postal News and A Collection of Desires. This original woodcut hails from the last named set which includes many of Yoshitoshi's most striking portrayals of beautiful women.

Condition: Printed upon nineteenth century Japanese mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published in Tokyo in 1878. Apart from a very minor stain on the cup held in the woman's hand this is a brilliant early impression bearing the wood grain indicative of an initial printing and with vibrant, unfaded colours. One should also note that there are original traces of printer's mica still to be seen on this fine impression. Altogether, this original woodcut represents a superb example of the famous art of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.
