Karl Ludwig Wust (Charles Louis Wust) & Cavaliere Mattia Preti

Karl Ludwig Wust and Cavaliere Mattia Preti - The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew The Dresden Gallery

The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew (The Dresden Gallery)

Karl Ludwig Wust's "The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew" is an original eighteenth century engraving created by the German artist in 1753. It is based upon a designe created by the Italian painter, Cavaliere Mattia Preti, (called, Il Calabrese). This impression is printed upon wove paper and with very large margins as published for the " Recueil d'estampes d'apres les plus celebres tableaux de la Galerie Royale de Dresde (The Dresden Gallery)" around 1795. "The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew" is a fine, original example of the 18th century religious art created by Karl Ludwig Wust, also known and listed as 'Charles Louis Wust' and 'Carl Wust'. Saint Bartholomew is one of the Twelve Apostles. He evangelized in the Near East and was martyred in Armenia by being flayed alive. He is the patron Saint of butchers and leather workers. Bartholomew's attributes are a flaying knife and a book.

Note: Karl Ludwig Wust 'Charles Louis Wust': A German engraver of the mid eighteenth century, Karl Ludwig Wust studied printmaking techniques under J. M. Preisler. During his career the artist lived and worked in both Germany and France. (In the latter country he worked under the name of 'Charles Louis Wust'.) Wust is known almost exclusively as an engraver of religious subjects.
Cavaliere Mattia Preti 'Mattia Preti' (called, Il Calabrese): A seventeenth century Italian painter, Mattia Preti (called, Il Calabrese) studied under Lanfranco, in Rome, and Guercino, in Cento. After working in both Venice and Bologna, Mattia Preti returned to Rome around 1657 where he painted pictures for the church of Sant' Andrea della Valle. After working in Malta, Pope Urban VIII conferred on him the knighthood of the order. Many of Cavaliere Mattia Preti's paintings depict martyrdoms and are stylistically compared to the works of Caravaggio and Ribera.
The Dresden Gallery: The Recueil d'estampes d'apres les plus celebres tableaux de la Galerie Royale de Dresde (The Dresden Gallery) represents a high point of mid to late eighteenth century engraving. Beginning around 1750 Dresden printers began inviting artists to engrave the masterworks at the Dresden Gallery. The size and scope of the endeavor is reflected in the international representation of the commissioned engravers. These included Jean Daulle (France, 1703-1763), Anna Folkema (Holland, 1695-1768), Karl Ludwig Wust (Germany, flourished, 1750-1760), Giuseppe Camerata (Italy, 1718-1803) and Claude Donat Jardinier (France, 1726-1774). Upon completion each of these large engravings was printed with titles in both Italian and French and bore the engraved seal of the Dresden Gallery along the lower margin. In 1753 the first fifty engravings were published as Volume One in a large elephant folio format. The second fifty engravings were completed in 1757 and issued as Volume Two. With their brilliant techniques of tone and texture most of these engravings were eagerly sought after in most major European centres.
Almost four decades after the completion of these sets a further fifty engravings were produced by the Dresden Gallery. Engraved mostly by German artists such as Christian Gottfried Schulze (1749-1819) and Heinrich Friedrich Laurin (1756-1830), these later works mainly dealt with the master works of landscape painting in the gallery. When this set was published (c. 1795), the earlier two sets were also reprinted. "The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew" hails from this edition and was published in Dresden around 1795.
