Fritz Wrampe

Fritz Wrampe - Gnu and Donkey - Gnu and Esel

Gnu and Donkey (Gnu and Esel)

Fritz Wrampe's original etching and drypoint engraving, "Gnu and Esel" (Gnu and Donkey) is printed upon wove paper and with large, full margins as created by the artist in Munich around 1925 - 1934. This impression is signed and titled, in pencil by the artist under the lower plate-mark. In the foreground, of this engraving Wrampe depicts a Gnu and a donkey and elephants are visible in the background. "Gnu and Esel" is a fine, original example of the animal depictions and the Expressionist art created by the German artist, Fritz Wrampe.

Title: Gnu and Donkey (Gnu and Esel)
Artist: Wrampe, Fritz (Munich, Germany, 1893 - 1934)
Date: c. 1925 - 1934
Medium: Original Etching and Drypoint Engraving
Note: Fritz Wrampe: German Expressionist sculptor and painter, the art of Fritz Wrampe is much better known today than during his lifetime. This is due primarily to the large exhibition of his works launched by the Neue Pinakothek in Munich 1993/1994, and the accompanying publication. *
The son of parents who operated a modest textile business, Fritz Wrampe received his art training at the Munich Academy. There he met and formed a lifelong (and finally tragic) relationship with the model, Anni Burghard. Burghard is seen in a number of his sculptures and drawings. In the former medium Fritz Wrampe worked in clay, stone and bronze. His drawings indicate financial hardship as many were executed on the verso of sample cards from his parent's textile business. In this medium Fritz Wrampe's usual subject matter was ideas for sculptures, figure studies and animal depictions drawn at the Munich Zoological Gardens. Obviously Gnu and Donkey (Gnu & Esel) (with a pair of elephants in the background) originates from this Zoological Garden.
Fritz Wrampe appears to have executed very few engravings or other forms of printmaking. Gnu and Donkey is the only original print I have seen from his hand and galleries and auction houses show no records of him working in this medium. Gnu and Donkey (Gnu & Esel), therefore, may be a unique work of art in Fritz Wrampe's oeuvre.
Today the Expressionist art of Fritz Wrampe is found in many private and public collections. German museums housing his work include the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, Duisberg, the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, and the Museum of Stuttgart.
