His Own Doctor

Thomas Waterman Wood's original etching, "His Own Doctor" is one of his most highly regarded works of art. T. W. Wood began depicting scenes of African American life as early as 1861 and continued to produce both fine etchings and paintings upon this subject throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century. In this delightful etching an elderly African American gentleman fights the ravages of a winter cold with the traditional weapons of tea, medicines and numerous blankets.

This original etching entitled, "His Own Doctor" is printed upon thick laid paper and with wide margins. It is signed and dated in the plate to the lower right and also signed in pencil by Thomas Waterman Wood along the lower margin.

Note: Thomas Waterman Wood 'T. W. Wood': An outstanding American etcher and painter of portraits, figure and genre scenes, Thomas Waterman Wood studied under Chester Harding, in Boston, and Hans Gude, in Dusseldorf. Early in his career (1846-1850) Wood actually lived and worked in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. T. W. Wood returned to Canada in 1855 and painted both in Montreal and Quebec City. Later he moved to Europe (1859-1861) and then permanently settled in New York City where he established a successful studio.
  T. W. Wood was most highly regarded for his portrayals and character studies. With equal ability he both painted and etched numerous scenes of nineteenth century American life. As well, he was one of the first artists to seriously explore the life of Blacks in the American South.
  Thomas Waterman Wood was a founding member of the important New York Etching Club and was also a member of the American Water Color Society and the National Arts Club. He was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy of Design in 1869 and a full Academician in 1871. The most complete collection of his etchings and paintings is housed in the Wood Art Gallery of Montpelier, Vermont. This institution is devoted entirely to Wood's art.

Condition: Printed upon thick laid paper and with wide margins extending at least two and a half inches from the plate mark on all sides. Containing traces of faint matt burning in the outer margins and a slightly weakened plate-mark along the left side due to initial printing pressure. Else a strong and beautiful, full sepia impression and in very good condition throughout. Signed and dated in the plate to the lower right and signed in pencil by the artist along the lower margin. His Own Doctor represents a prime, original example of the famous African American based art of Thomas Waterman Wood.
