Albert Weinert

Albert Weinert - Tigers Is Only Cats

Tigers Is Only Cats

Title: Tigers Is Only Cats
Artist: Weinert, Albert (Leipzig, Germany, 1863 - New York, 1937)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Pen & Ink Drawing
Note: Albert Weinert: Born in Germany, Albert Weinert first studied art at the Leipzig Academy, under Meichior zur Strapen. He later finished his artistic education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, and in Paris. Albert Weinert emigrated to the United States around 1896 and initially established his reputation in New York as a leading sculptor. He was elected to the prestigious National Sculpture Society, in 1909, and was also an active member of the Society of Independent Artists. During the first two decades of the twentieth century Weinert worked on major municipal commissions, such as, the Monument to President McKinley, Toledo, Ohio, Monument to Lord Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, statues for the facade of the Masonic Building, San Francisco, and interior sculptures for the Congressional Library, Washington, DC. He was also a primary exhibitor for architectural sculpture at the famous Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.
  Beginning around, 1920 Albert Weinert also turned his talents towards the art of illustration. A number of illustrated books, particularly children's books, are embellished with his fine pen and ink drawings. This original drawing was commissioned as the frontis piece for the 1929 children's novel, Tigers is only Cats, written by Sophie Kerr (1880-1965). It illustrates a scene in the story where the young heroine spies her fearless aunt walking a leashed tiger as if it were a household pet. The quotation is as follows;
  "Mary looked out and gasped, 'Oh, Aunt Katie what are you Doing?,' she called frantically.'"
  Relatively few of Albert Weinert's original drawings have survived. Tigers is only Cats is clearly one of his largest and most impressive works of illustrative art.
Reference: G. B. Opitz, Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, New York, Apollo Books, 1987, p. 1006.
Size: 18 X 22 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Drawn upon thick wove paper measuring approximately 18" x 22". Staining has occurred in the upper corners and the margins contain a number of small tears, including several running through the title, located in the upper margin. No damage, however, has taken place within the actual drawing itself. (Within several areas the artist has scraped or applied china white to eliminate unwanted lines or shades. This is typical of illustrated drawings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.) Signed by Albert Weinert to the lower left corner of the drawing. Tigers is only Cats is a spectacular, original example of the talents of Albert Weinert and of American illustrative art from the 1920's era.
