Robert Wehrlin

Robert Wehrlin - Interior Scene with Cats Title Unknown

Interior Scene with Cats (Title Unknown)

Robert Wehrlin's original etching, drypoint engraving and aquatint, Interior Scene with Cats (Title Unknown) probably dates from around 1940 but may have been created as early as 1928. In 1928 Robert Wehrlin began his association with Jacques Villon where the two Paris artists began experimenting with various graphic techniques. This is clearly evident in this remarkable print where etching, drypoint, aquatint and possibly layered plate tones combine to create a unique work of art.

Robert Wehrlin rarely numbered his etchings in specific editions. A constant innovator he would produce but one artist proof impression, or significantly alter the composition for a second impression. In all likelihood Interior Scene with Cats (Title Unknown) exists in only this impression. It is signed in pencil to the lower right and annotated, "Ep. d' A" (Artist Proof), to the lower left by the Swiss / French artist, Robert Wehrlin.

Note: Robert Wehrlin: An important twentieth century Swiss / French painter, engraver, etcher and lithographer, Robert Wehrlin first formally studied to become a lawyer. The year 1922, however, proved to be a turning point. He visited his mother who was undergoing treatment for a respiratory ailment (probably tuberculosis) in the town of Davos. Another patient there was none other than Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), who immediately proved to be a major influence upon both Wehrlin's art and life. While living in Davos Kirchner also taught other young artists such as Albert Muller, Hermann Scherer, Philip Bauknecht and Jan Wiegers (1893-1959). Upon each visit to Davos Robert Wehrlin took lessons in both painting and printmaking from this Expressionist master and two years later he abandoned his law studies and moved to Paris to pursue a career in the arts. Kirchner must have found Wehrlin an interesting study as he created three portraits of him during this period (two woodcuts and one oil painting).
After attending various classes in Paris Robert Wehrlin studied contemporary art techniques under Andre Lhote. In the following year (1925) he exhibited his first works at the Salon d'Automne. Working from his studio in Montparnasse he exhibited his first paintings and prints at the Salon des Independants and the Salon des Tuilleries in 1928. During this period Wehrlin studied the art of his School of Paris contemporaries, most notably Matisse, but the expressionist art and theories of Kirchner continued to be his largest inspiration. As well (in 1928) he met Jacques Villon and together the artists created many fine etchings and engravings using multiple plates and printings.
Robert Wehrlin was named a member of Winterthur's 'Kunstlergruppe' in 1932 and became a member and regular contributor of La Jeune Gravure Contemporaine in 1937. During the Second World War (1939-1945) he left Paris for a workshop in Antony. Some of his graphic art from this period was decidedly anti-Nazi, and living in Paris probably posed a threat to his safety.
At the war's end Wehrlin opened a second studio in his native city of Winterthur and divided the rest of his working life between France and Switzerland. During his final years the artist continued to create not only paintings and original graphic art, but also tapestries, murals and stained glass windows for several churches. As well he illustrated a number of books with his original lithographs within this period.
Although Robert Wehrlin was very well known as a School of Paris painter and printmaker during his life, his reputation and place in twentieth century art seems to have grown since his death. By some accounts Wehrlin distrusted the art market and his working techniques, such as not publishing his etchings and engravings in numbered editions, and indeed, not signing many of his paintings and prints, may have helped to keep him out of the collector's eye. For most of his career Roger Wehrlin owned his own etching press and was constantly experimenting with unique proofs, such as this original example. The self promotion that accompanies published editions was not apparently for him.
Since 1990, however, major retrospective exhibitions of Robert Wehrlin's art have taken place in such cities as Winterthur, Neuchatel, Bischofszell, Elsau, Palaiseau, Antony and Paris. Today the art of Robert Wehrlin is included in such institutions as the Musee de Winterthur, Musee du Canton de Thurgovie, Musee du Mont de Piete a Bergues, Musee 'La Piscine' de Roubaix, le Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, and the British Museum, London.
