Adelaide Webster-Donald

Adelaide Webster Donald - Portrait of a Lady

Portrait of a Lady

Adelaide Webster's original oil painting on canvas, "Portrait of a Lady" was created around 1945. In this portrait, Realism is deliberately rejected in favour of atmospheric elements and the masterful application of colours and light and shade. The completed work of art thus evokes and suggests rather than describes and the result is a masterwork of major dimensions. " Portrait of a Lady" is a superb, original example of the portrait art created by the British/Canadian artist, Adelaide Webster-Donald

Title: Portrait of a Lady
Artist: Webster-Donald, Adelaide (Glasgow, 1877 - Montreal, Canada, 1974)
Date: c. 1945
Medium: Original Oil Painting on Canvas
Note: Adelaide Webster-Donald 'Adelaide Webster': A Fine British/Canadian painter and watercolourist, Adelaide Webster had a brilliant start to her career. She began to regularly exhibit her portraits and landscapes at the Glasgow Institute in 1899 and also completed her studies in Paris during this period. There she was acquainted with many of the leading French painters of the day, including Degas. After completing her studies, Adelaide Webster lived and worked in both London and in Paris. In London she exhibited frequently with the society of Women Artists (until 1919) and her early career was crowned by being awarded the prestigious Prix de Paris in 1910.
Adelaide Webster's career took an abrupt turn at the end of the First World War when she married a Presbyterian Minister from Montreal. After moving to Montreal (c. 1920) she was not permitted to exhibit her paintings because of her husband's rigid religious beliefs. However, Adelaide Webster maintained a downtown studio on Crescent Street and eventually became friends with such leading artists as Arthur Lismer and Harold Beament. After her husband's death in 1936, Adelaide Webster again began to exhibit her art, most particularly through Montreal's Dominion Gallery. During her career in Montreal she was also commissioned to paint the portraits of many prominent individuals, including Norman Bethune and Dame Sarah Fisher.
Some analysts have emphasized Impressionistic elements in Adelaide Webster's art. This is particularly true of the paintings and watercolours she made after moving to Montreal, such as this original example. Here Realism is deliberately rejected in favour of atmospheric elements and the masterful application of colours and light and shade. The completed work of art thus evokes and suggests rather than describes and the result is a masterwork of major dimensions.
