William Warner's original engraving and mezzotint, "Colonel John Swift" is an based on a painting created by Thomas Wilcocks Sully 'Thomas Sully, junior'. It is printed upon nineteenth century wove paper as published around 1840. "Colonel John Swift was prominent 19th century Philadelphia lawyer and politician. He rose to become the leader of the Philadelphia Whig party and served as Mayor of that city. This is a fine, original example of the portrait art created by the American artist, William Warner.

Note: William Warner: Despite a short life, William Warner distinguished himself as a portrait painter and mezzotint engraver. Mainly self-taught, Warner exhibited his art at the Pennsylvania Academy, Apollo Association and at the Artists' Fund Society. A finely rendered mezzotint engraving, "John Smith" is based upon a painting by Thomas Wilcocks Sully (1811-1847), a Philadelphia portrait and miniature painter.
  Colonel John Swift: A prominent Philadelphia lawyer and politician, Colonel John Swift (1790-1873) was admitted to the bar in 1810. He rose to become the leader of the Philadelphia Whig party and served as Mayor of that city on three separate occasions (1832-1838, 1839-1841 and 1845-1849). In 1840 John Swift became the first Philadelphia mayor to be elected by popular election.

Condition: Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with margins trimmed to within a 1/4 inch of the image. Containing glue staining on the verso corners and slight scraping to the actual engraving, else a strongly printed, early impression and in good condition throughout. "Colonel John Swift" represents both a scarce and important original example of the portrait art of William Warner.
