Bernhardt Wall's "71st Regt. Armory, New York City" is an original World War One etching, showing the complete armory and the long line of men formed outside it to enlist. Various onlookers, load signs and a fruit stand seller with his produce complete this large and interesting etching. This historic armory was located on the block between 34th and 33rd streets in Manhattan. This original etching is signed and titled, "71st Regt. Armory, April, 1917" in the plate and also signed in pencil under the plate-mark by the American artist, Bernhardt Wall.

Note: Bernhardt Wall: An American etcher, illustrator and historian, Bernhardt Wall first studied at the Buffalo Art Students League before going to New York to study under Henry Reuterdahl and apprentice in etching under William Auerbach-Levy. He began his career as a lithographic illustrator in 1889 and then served with the 202nd NY Volunteers during the Spanish-American War. From 1902 to 1913, Bernhardt Wall worked mainly as a commercial artist in both New York and Buffalo.
  The year of 1915 marked a defining point in Bernhardt Wall's artistic career. He visited Colorado, Nevada and California making etchings of Indians, cowboys and major cities which were later published in a portfolio entitled, "Under Western Skies". These proved to be very successful and the artist shortly thereafter moved to California permanently. Bernhardt Wall continued to produce many fine etchings of the American West and by 1930 had also become a much respected historian of the region.

  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon fine, hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as published in 1917. Signed and titled, "71st Regt. Armory, April, 1917" in the plate and also signed in pencil under the plate-mark. It is a finely printed impression in sepia tones and in excellent condition throughout. This important First World War etching stands as a prime, original example of the American art of Bernhardt Wall.
