Note:	Jessica Walker Stephens: A well known British school painter, illustrator and writer upon the arts, Jessica Walker was born and raised in Arizona. Shortly after the turn of the century she moved to England to study at the Liverpool School of Art. Because of her work there she was awarded a travelling scholarship to both Florence and Paris where she finished her education under Castolucho and others. .
	Jessica Walker began to exhibit her paintings and watercolours in national British exhibitions in 1904. Until the outbreak of the First World War (1914) most of her art dealt with genre subjects and relatedly, commissions for illustrated books. In this latter category she produced drawings and watercolours for the poetry of Browning and the adventure - historical fiction of J. F. Cooper and Robert Louis Stevenson. This original watercolour was no doubt intended for one of Stevenson's novels, probably either Kidnapped or Treasure Island.
	Around 1915 Jessica Walker married H. E. Stephens. Most of her art created after this time was thus signed, "J.W.S." or "J. Walker Stephens". As well, she was assigned both as an editor and art critic for the prestigious Studio magazine, and held this post for more than twenty years. During her career, Jessica Walker exhibited extensively with the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the London Salon and at the Royal Cambrian Academy.

Condition:	Painted upon thick, laid watercolour paper and with full margins. Very faint traces of water staining appear on the lower margins, else in fine condition throughout with strong, unfaded colours. Also, unlike many watercolours from this period, Coming Ashore is fortunately not backed on board. Signed, "J. Walker", by the artist to the lower right. This original watercolour stands as a prime example of the great illustrative art of Jessica Walker Stephens.
