Note: War of 1812 depictions: For the collectors of original nineteenth century art dealing with the War of 1812, the selection is usually discouraging. Only several events from the War were represented with any frequency during the 1800's. The most popular imagery on the American side was General Jackson's defense of New Orleans. Canadians countered with their own heroic episode -- that of Brock repelling the Americans at Queenston Heights. Both encounters were distorted to mythic proportions and were used as prime symbols of nineteenth century propaganda. Art publishers on both sides of the borders knew they could 'cash in' by producing these scenes for patriotic customers.
Because of this, there were battles and engagements throughout the war that were rarely written about or portrayed in art and literature. Yet some of these conflicts were even more important to the course of the war and subsequent peace than either New Orleans or Queenston Heights. One of the few exceptions, however, was the New York publisher, Virtue, Emmins & Company. In 1859 this publisher issued a set of approximately twenty fine engravings depicting a number of War of 1812 battles. All the plates were engraved by either F. F. Walker or William Wellstood. These scarce, early engravings are coveted by collectors because they represent views of events that were rarely depicted in original nineteen century printmaking. Commodore Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie was engraved by F. F. Walker and published in 1859.
