"Susan Drew of Salem" is an original etching created by George Canning Wales. This impression is printed upon hand made, laid paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with large, full margins as published in Boston in 1917. It is titled in the plate to the lower right and is also signed in pencil by George C. Wales along the lower margin. In this scene, Wales depicts the Susan Drew of Salem, a smart sailing vessel (schooner) at sea. It is a fine, original example of the marine art created by the American artist, George Canning Wales.

Note: George Canning Wales 'George Wales': A leading American marine etcher and painter of the early twentieth century, George Wales actually spent the first part of his life as an architect. To this end he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1885 to 1888. He first worked for the architectural company of Peabody & Stearns and then founded his own Boston architectural firm which he managed from 1893 to 1924. George C. Wales first studied etching in 1917 under William M. Paxton. His first published etchings such as, Susan Drew of Salem, date from that year. In 1921 Goodspeed's Bookshop in Boston launched a major exhibition of Wales's etchings and lithographs. The Sailor's Magazine and Naval Journal published by the American Seamen's Friend Society, published in 1849 reports a vessel by that name; it reads; "Ship Susan Drew, of Salem, reported at Nasaw, having been ashore off Stirrup Cays. She was abandoned by Capt. Benson."
  George Canning Wales was a full member of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Guild of Boston Artists and the American Federation of Arts. Today examples of his fine nautical etchings are included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the New York Public Library, The British Museum, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Stavanger Museum, Norway, and the United States Naval Academy.
Size: 4 7/8 X 6 7/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon hand made, laid paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with large, full margins as published in Boston in 1917. Containing mat burning about 1/4" from the plate-mark on all sides, else a well printed impression with full plate tone and in good condition throughout. Titled in the plate to the lower right and signed in pencil by George C. Wales along the lower margin. Susan Drew of Salem stands as a prime, original example of the marine art of George Canning Wales.
