Joseph Wagner - Sanctus Osvaldus Rex and Martyr Saint Oswald King and Martyr - An Original Engraving

Sanctus Osvaldus Rex, & Martyr (Saint Oswald, King & Martyr)

Joseph Wagner's "Sanctus Osvaldus Rex, & Martyr" is an original engraving. The scene depicts the Ascension of Saint Oswald. Oswald (c. 605-642) was the legendary King of Northumbria. An early Christian, he reunited the Northhumbrian Kingdom by defeating the Britons at Hevenfelt. In the following years much of Britain fell to Oswald's control, and he was vigorous in converting his subjects and allies from paganism to Christianity. Oswald died at the battle of Maserfeld in 642. Shortly thereafter he came to be regarded as a saint.

This original engraving is printed upon eighteenth century hand-made, laid paper as published in Venice around 1750. "Sanctus Osvaldus Rex, & Martyr" is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the German artist, Joseph Wagner.

Note: Joseph Wagner: A highly regarded eighteenth century engraver, Joseph Wagner studied painting under Jacopo Amigoni, in Venice. This Italian master, however, persuaded Joseph Wagner to turn his talents to the art of engraving. It proved to be to Amigoni's advantage as for the following ten years Wagner was largely employed by him to engrave designs from his paintings. Joseph Wagner accompanied his former teacher to Rome, Bologna, Paris and England (1733). His first commission in England was to engrave the portraits of the daughters of George II -- Anne, Amelia and Caroline. After residing in London for several years, Joseph Wagner returned to Venice.
In the following years, Joseph Wagner excelled in portrait studies, religious scenes and landscape depictions. Among his most famous engravings (as listed by G. C. Williamson *) are "Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia", "The Holy Family" (after Veronese), "St. John in the Desert", "The Meeting of Jacob and Rachel and Mary", "The Infant Jesus and Joseph".
In the latter part of his career Joseph Wagner returned to Venice and opened a school of engraving, as well as conducting a profitable publishing house. "Sanctus Osvaldus Rex, & Martyr" probably dates from this period as it is signed, "Wagner Venezia" (Venice). Among Joseph Wagner's best known assistants and students were Flipart, Beraldi and Francesco Bartolozzi, who would become England's greatest master of the stipple engraving in the late eighteenth century.
