Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth

Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth - Fasanenjagd Pheasant Shooting

Fasanenjagd (Pheasant-Shooting)

Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth's original etching and drypoint, "Fasanenjagd (Pheasant-Shooting)" is printed upon thick wove paper and with full margins as published by Kunst und Kunstler in 1911. It bears Kalckreuth's monogram in the plate to the lower left. "Fasanenjagd" contains strong elements of Symbolism. Here, the image to the lower right depicts a scene involving pheasant shooting, true to its title. Yet two seemingly unrelated portrait studies of children, dominate the upper half of the panel. One can assume they are spectators at the shoot, but it is their compelling, almost haunting features that form the core of this fine etching. Fasanenjagd (Pheasant-Shooting) is a fine, original example of the influential art created by the German artist, Leopold Kalckreuth.

Title: Fasanenjagd (Pheasant-Shooting)
Artist: Von Kalckreuth, Leopold Graf (Dusseldorf, 1855 - Eddelsen (Hanover), 1928)
Date: 1911
Medium: Original Etching and drypoint
Publisher: Kunst und Kunstler
Note: Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth 'Leopold Kalckreuth': The son of the nineteenth century landscape painter, Eduard Stanislaus Graf von Kalckreuth (1820-1894), Leopold Kalckreuth first studied art from 1875 to 1878 at the Kunstschule in Weimar, under Ferdinand Schauss, Willem Linnig and Alexander Struys. He then concluded his studies at the Akademie, Munich, under Gyula Benczur and Wilhelm von Diez. Kalckreuth travelled to Holland, Italy and France (1883) and then accepted a teaching post at the Weimar Kunstschule (1885-1890).
In 1890 Leopold Kalckreuth returned to Munich and two years later was a co-founder of the influential Munich Secession. During this decade the artist also worked extensively in Silesia and his art was frequently exhibited in Paris, Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Weimar, Vienna and elsewhere. Kalckreuth was the recipient of medals at Universal Expositions in Munich (1888) and Paris (1889 and 1900).
In the early twentieth century Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth accepted the post of professor of art at the Stuttgart Academy. His influence there was considerable as some of his students included Heinrich Nauen, Karl Hofer, Louis Moilliet and Georges Seurat.
In his original etchings, lithographs and paintings, Kalckreuth's art belongs to no specific school. His nineteenth century art (landscapes and figure studies) bears common ground with both German Romanticism and Naturalism. By the first decade of the twentieth century, however, strong elements of Symbolism are evident. In Fasanenjagd (Pheasant-Shooting), for example, the image to the lower right depicts a scene involving pheasant shooting, true to its title. Yet two seemingly unrelated studies of children, dominate the upper half of the panel. One can assume they are spectators at the shoot, but it is their compelling, almost haunting features that form the core of this fine etching.
Several months after Leopold Kalckreuth's death in 1928, the Biblitheque Nationale, Paris, launched a large retrospective exhibition of his fine art. Today the work of Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth is included in the permanent collections of major public museums in Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Manheim and Munich.
