Theodore Valerio

Paysan Slovaque de Tyrnau (Slovak Peasant from Tyrnau)

Theodore Valerio's original etching, "Paysan Slovaque de Tyrnau" (Slovak Peasant from Tyrnau) is printed upon a fine sheet of china paper and impressed onto a large sheet of white, wove paper as published in Paris by Auguste Delatre in 1853. It is one of a series etchings Theodore Valerio delineated portraying the lives of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples (Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires) from 1853 to 1865.

Title: Paysan Slovaque de Tyrnau (Slovak Peasant from Tyrnau)
Artist: Valerio, Theodore (Herserange, 1819 - Vichy, 1879)
Date: 1853
Medium: Original Etching
Printer: Auguste Delatre, Paris
Note: Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires
Note: Theodore Valerio: A famous French etcher, painter and lithographer, Theodore Valerio was a pupil and lifelong friend of Charlet. Displaying considerable talent at an early age, Valerio began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1838 at age nineteen. As a young man he both studied and etched in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Shortly thereafter Valerio made his first of many trips to the Hungarian Empire and to the Baltic States. He was immediately drawn to the customs and lives of these peoples and thereafter devoted most of his art to them.
From 1853 to 1865 Valerio recorded the dress, customs and habitations of the Hungarian and Baltic peoples with several brilliant series of original etchings. Although these etchings faithfully render each and every detail, these are no mere costume plates. Both Valerio's gifted talents and his deep reverence for the persons he portrayed make these etchings major works of art. Indeed, one has to search all the way back to the seventeenth century studies of Wenzel Hollar to find anything so accomplished in this medium.
Valerio's etchings delineating the lives of the Hungarian, Baltic and Slavic peoples were printed in Paris by Auguste Delatre. Perhaps the finest printer of etchings of any era, such contemporary masters as Whistler, Meryon, Millet, Rousseau and Daubigny relied upon Delatre for his skills and expertise. As well, this particular impression of Paysan Slovaque de Tyrnau (Slovak Peasant from Tyrnau) appears to be from a select edition. It is printed upon fine, China paper and impressed onto a large sheet of white, wove paper. Furthermore it bears Theodore Valerio's red 'cache de vente' 'T.V.' seal within the etching along the lower margin.
Among the many fine works created during his artistic career, Theodore Valerio also illustrated Souvenirs de la Monarchie Autrichienne, a set of designs etched by Valerio, printed by Pierron and Delatre, Paris, 1853. That same year (1853), Valerio's original lithograph, Souvenir de Holland (Remembrance of Holland) was published in Paris by L'Artiste and printed by Auguste Bry in Paris. Valerio's original etching entitled, Bacho-bozoucq (Souvenir de Silistrie), from the Societe des Aquafortistes, Paris, Eaux-Fortes Modernes Originales et Inedites, was published in 1864 and edited by Cadart & Luquet. Listed below are various 19th century etchings created by Thodore Valereio for a series of costume designs from the Costumes de la Hongrie et des Provinces Danubiennes Dalmatie, Montenegro, Croatie, Slavonie, Frontieres Militaires created from 1853 to 1865. In the final decade of his life, Valerio visited England. He was not however impressed by what he termed, "the gray and green appearance of the country." He spent his last years in ill health in Brittany, always longing to return to the Hungarian lands he so loved.
Size: 11 3/8 X 7 3/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on thick, white, wove paper and with full margins as published on the above date. It should be noted that the dimensions of the paper are almost as large as the matte, probably indicating that these extra wide margins were used for an early and special printing. The etching itself is printed on a fine sheet of china paper, which has been pressed into the wove paper and runs almost to the plate-mark. Signed and dated in the plate by Valerio and bearing his red 'cache de vente' seal. This original entitled, Paysan Slovaque de Tyrnau etching is in excellent condition.
